What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Senior Services
People Coordinated Services (PCS) considers it both its responsibility and privilege to care for seniors and empower them to live independently long after their retirement. With this significant and compelling motivation, the Agency works to link older adults to resources that are designed to meet their physical and psychosocial needs and provide quality services which promote independent living and support them in maintaining their dignity and living the highest quality of life possible. Major senior services include: Senior Multi-Purpose Centers, Case Management, Transportation, and Nutrition Services.Senior Multi-Purpose Centers
Retirement is a withdrawal from daily work – not from life. Recognizing this, PCS’s Senior Multi-Purpose Centers offer a variety of services at two central locations, allowing seniors to optimize their day and retirement. Whether a computer class, exercise, flu clinic, music, art or one of the many other activities, the PCS Senior Multi-Purpose Centers provide a range of social, recreational, educational, and other activities and classes which support the physical and social well-being of hundreds of seniors each year. The Centers also house the Agency’s Information and Referral Program, which assists seniors in person or telephonically by providing service referrals and responding to questions. PCS puts seniors first by providing information, encouragement, fellowship, and resources, all of which are a part of the Center’s philosophy which supports lifelong learning, senior advocacy, and improved accessibility to resources.
Case Management
Many of the community’s seniors face early institutionalization as their ability to manage their daily activities diminishes. Their plight is further impacted by isolation and the resulting loneliness. Through a case management approach, initiated with a comprehensive in-home assessment, PCS helps to provide solutions, which include helping seniors with basic needs, such as housekeeping, personal hygiene, home maintenance, handicapped accessibility and a variety of other services and linkages.
Transportation
Many seniors living in our communities have to overcome transportation barriers due to physical limitations or other causes. For many seniors, their independence is jeopardized when they are no longer able to drive or access public transportation. That is why PCS is there to provide our clients with prompt, safe transportation. PCS vans and buses provide transportation to medical appointments, shopping, community activities or other transportation needs. On an annual basis, the PCS team provides more than 14,000 reliable, door-to-door transportation services, helping seniors to stay connected and active.
Nutrition Services
A well-balanced meal is essential to the continuing health needs of our seniors. Annually, People Coordinated Services delivers nearly 158,000 nutritious, hot lunches to home-bound and frail seniors. This hot meal means much more than food alone for the seniors who are visited daily by our drivers. This daily connection is an opportunity for our drivers to share the message that PCS cares. The Agency also serves, on an annual basis, nearly 106,300 hot meals to active seniors at strategically located congregate sites through the Southwestern and West Adams areas of Los Angeles. The combined home-delivered and congregate meals total more than 264,200 meals annually.
Substance Abuse Prevention, Intervention, and Treatment Services
The PCS Castle Substance Abuse Recovery Programs have been a haven for recovery for the past thirty-eight years. The Programs work in partnership with individuals, families, and the community to break the cycle of addiction and replace it with empowerment and self-sufficiency. Care, compassion, and commitment are exemplified by the dedicated Agency staff who support clients in tackling the issues of addiction and behavioral health. The PCS Castle Substance Abuse Recovery Programs provide three primary modes of services, including: PCS Castle Residential Services, PCS Outpatient Recovery Services and Substance-Free Living Centers. The Programs use innovative, best practice techniques in working with clients to pursue their health and healing in licensed facilities and through certified programs.Castle Residential Services
People Coordinated Services has two residences with a licensed capacity of 125 beds – PCS Castle East and PCS Castle West – that provide more than 30,000 bed days to nearly 500 clients admitted to treatment annually. Recognizing that people are never truly alone in their struggle with chemical dependency, the family and the community are intimately connected to the client as they move from the orientation or critical adjustment phase to community transition, with renewed hope for tomorrow. Through individual, group counseling, and a myriad of ancillary services, clients are able to explore the factors that brought them to treatment and face the challenge of changing their lives with dignity and courage. Clients provide friendship and accountability to one another in a safe, drug-free environment.
Castle Outpatient Recovery Services
PCS’s state-certified Castle Outpatient Recovery Program provides more than 4,500 individual and 11,500 group units to approximately 600 persons who are formally admitted for services. The Program provides chemical dependency prevention, intervention, and treatment strategies to persons whose addiction has not advanced to the point that inpatient treatment is required. Like in PCS’s residential services, ancillary services are provided to compliment the recovery process for the individual and the family. Outpatient services provide a valuable lifeline to alumni from the residential programs who seek follow-up and support. A community drop-in center provides information, referral, and self-help groups.
Substance-Free Living Centers
Clients who successfully graduate from the Agency’s Castle Residential Programs and no longer require a structured therapeutic environment may seek affordable housing at the Substance-Free Living Centers. The friendships and recovery environments provide support to residents who seek lifelong abstinence from drugs and alcohol. All resident of PCS’s Substance-Free Living Centers must be gainfully employed and have a plan in place to maintain abstinence from drugs and alcohol. The residents are a testimony to the fact that treatment works.
Youth and Family Services
Strengthening the entire multi-generational family system is an integral part of building vibrant communities. That is why PCS seeks to provide programs and activities that promote healthy, successful youth, families, and neighborhoods. PCS partners with youth and their families to strengthen and empower them while raising awareness, improving student achievement, increasing neighborhood participation, promoting healthy lifestyles, harmonizing family life, and preventing drug, alcohol, and gang involvement. Coordinated and integrated programs work together to provide an array of services to more than 1,900 youth and families.Gang Reduction and Youth Development Program
The PCS Gang Reduction and Youth Development (GRYD) Program works in collaboration with several partners to bring comprehensive gang prevention services to youth, ages 10-15 years and residing in the Newton Area of Los Angeles County. The primary outcome goals of the program are to (1) limit the number of youth that will become involved in area street gangs; (2) reduce the level of association with area street gangs; (3) reduce the number of gang risk factors; (4) reduce gang-related victimization; and (5) reduce gang-related violence and criminal behavior. The Program addresses the full range of individual, family, peer, school, and community factors that contribute to gang activity. PCS uses a case management model to provide comprehensive services to youth and families with the following services being available: Multi-Cultural Rites of Passage, anger management, therapy, recreation, tutoring, drug prevention, effective parenting and family foundation strengthening, field trips, service linkages and safe passage to and from school.
Youth Empowerment Program
The Youth Empowerment Program celebrates the diversity of our community by focusing on activities that enhance self-esteem, deter gang affiliation, and prevent alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. PCS focuses on cultivation of leadership qualities in the community’s youth so they can be a life-changing influence among their friends and families. Leadership abilities are developed through community organization and empowerment activities, participation in sports, academic enrichment, and exposure to cultural activities. Youth are trained to be involved in community advocacy and organization for the prevention of drug and alcohol usage.
School Readiness Program
The PCS School Readiness Program – Teaching to Enrich and Nurture – targets infants and toddlers, ages 0-5 years. The program utilizes a Mommy and Me early care and education model to ensure that the children enter school prepared to learn and succeed. Services are provided in zip code 90011, an area which is characterized by poverty, crime and some of the lowest education scores in the State. Educational activities, case management, effective parenting, and other service enhancements are available within the program. The PCS School Readiness Program is designed to (1) document, assess and enhance children’s learning; (2) empower parents to become active advocates and participants in educating their children; (3) provide ECE teachers with the tools needed to successfully enrich children’s education, and (4) offer a case management approach to address other issues which could negatively impact family functioning and education in children.
