What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

In 2013, the state of California cut all funding for recreation programs for children and adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities. Since that time, we have had to rely on fundraising to continue to support recreational programs including summer day camp for children with autism, out of town recreational trips for adults wit disabilities, art programs and more.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Preschool and Early Childhood Services

The Therese M. Hall Children's Center is a state licensed preschool for children with and without disabilities. The center is an innovative preschool experience that includes "peer modeling" in which children with developmental disabilities pattern themselves with the actions of normative peers. With this philosophy, we meet the needs of young children with differing abilities and learning opportunities. Our program offers age appropriate curriculum in the cognitive, physical, social/emotional and language areas as well as USDA approved menus. The preschool is also home for our Early Childhood Services program. In this program, trained therapists visit the homes of children who have been identified as not meeting developmental milestones. The therapist works with parents and child to reach developmental goals. The preschool and the toddler program are open to the entire community.

DART offers a variety of opportunities for persons served to increase their vocational skills through training and situational assessment. Skilled individuals with disabilities work with trained job coaches as part of integrated community employment. Our supported employment program is based on long term contracts with local and state agencies, private businesses and contracts with CalTrans and the U.S. governments. Workers are part of crews on contracts out in the community, performing a variety of jobs including but not limited to: grounds keeping, commercial janitorial services, shelf stocking and commissary custodial services. Our service contractors include China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station (CLNAWS) and CalTrans as well as many local businesses. DART has been a contractor for CLNAWS and Caltrans for 20 years.

SLS provides persons with disabilities the opportunity to live independently with necessary services and support. Individuals establish independent and safe home environments and have access to 24-hour emergency assistance. Managing personal matters, building and maintaining relationships are some of the priorities of enrolled clients. Hours of service are based on individual assessments of need and mutually agreed goals. CIT is available is available to persons living with their families to help them transition into independent living. Many persons who live with their families are unprepared and lack skills to live independently. Sometimes this is because a caring family is overprotective and, on the other end of the scale, sometimes caretakers lack interest or ability to teach living skills. We teach clients how to shop, cook, bank, and in some cases, socialize. Hours are assessed and goals determined. The ultimate goal is independence in their own home.

DART offers vocational training and assessment of work skills and habits. This includes pre vocational training, situational assessment, and full time paid work with benefits. The program is provided at the DART Thrift Store. Work may include a variety of tasks supporting functions and operation of the store including: processing and sorting donations, customer service, grooming and displaying items, maintaining the sales floor, special short term contracts and assisting with the cashier. Emphasis is placed on workplace behavior and socialization. From this initial training experience, many persons go on to work with one of our contract crews.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Desert Area Resources and Training's goal has always been to provide opportunities for adults and children with disabilities, and their families to pursue not only their dreams, but the kind of lifestyles they wish to have, whatever those might be. We have a goal of desiring independence for those we serve, whether its community employment, living independently in their own home, attending preschool programs with children without disabilities or enjoying their leisure time in the way that they choose. We strive to offer families options in services so that they are able to participate in daily life any way they choose.

Our strategies for providing quality services for the individuals and families we serve are to try and continue to keep up with the ever-changing landscape of the developmental disabilities field. Daily we address the changes to how we provide services, how the state and the nation feel we should provide services and most importantly, how those we serve WISH for us to provide services.

Desert Area Resources and Training has been providing services to individuals and families since 1961. We have continued to be the premiere provider of services to people with disabilities in our community. We were the first organization to have a licensed preschool in our community that served children with and without disabilities in an integrated daily setting. We provide employment training to over 50 individuals daily and have begun more intensive training to move people towards community employment.
We also help people with disabilities on a daily basis live the lifestyles they choose to live by assisting them to live as independently as possible with supports we provide to them as needed.

We continue to provide quality children's programs, employment training and supported living skills training without a substantial increase to our funding in over 10 years.
