Gay & Lesbian Community Services Center of Orange County

Empowering LGBTQ Orange County

aka LGBT Center OC   |   Santa Ana, CA   |  www.lgbtcenteroc.org

Mission

The LGBTQ Center OC’s mission is to advocate on behalf of the Orange County Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Queer/Questioning communities and provide services that ensure its well-being and positive identity.

Notes from the nonprofit

The LGBTQ Center OC was established as a volunteer organization in 1971 and incorporated in 1975 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit community-based organization. We are one of the oldest gay and lesbian community centers in the United States. At the LGBTQ Center OC, all members and allies of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community of Orange County join together in a network of support and unity. Our life-affirming programs focus on empowerment, and our advocacy efforts focus on speaking out against hate and discrimination. We exist so that every segment of the LGBTQ population of Orange County has the resources needed to thrive in their own lives and communities.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our advocacy goals are to end the marginalization of the LGBTQ community in Orange County. We are working to create a community where the presence and contributions of LGBTQ people are welcomed and celebrated. We advocate for inclusion, non-discrimination, and equity so that all LGBTQ people are free, equal and secure.

We support Gay Straight Alliances in Orange County Schools as well as support school teachers and administrators in the implementation of LGBT affirming legislation. We work with law enforcement agencies to write and implement LGBTQ affirming policies. We train legal professional, health professionals, social service agencies, and employers to be culturally competent in working with LGBT clients, patients, and employees. We also work with other community based organizations to advocate on behalf of Orange County's LGBT community.

The LGBT Center OC has been advocating on behalf of the LGBT community since it was founded in 1971. We have a rich history in making progress for our community and empowering individuals to reach their full potential. Most of our programs are peer led and highly effective at reaching the most underserved population in Orange County.

The number of clients served, GSA's supported, school districts supported, and cultural competency trainings provided increase each year. Our footprint expands as we meet more and more need from our community.

Data
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
