Operation School Bell

Assistance League of Bakersfield was originally organized as a Volunteer Service Guild in 1956, and became a chartered member (the 23rd chapter) of the National Assistance League in 1958. Since its inception 55 years ago, Assistance League of Bakersfield has been serving the Bakersfield/Kern County, California, area through its philanthropic program, Operation School Bell. The National Assistance League adopted Operation School Bell as its national program in 1997. The program's purpose is to provide basic clothing for socioeconomically disadvantaged elementary school boys and girls, who are referred by the Health Services Department of school districts within Bakersfield City and Kern County, California. Each student referred to the program receives two new outfits which include: two pants/skorts, three polo shirts, three pairs of underwear, socks, a jacket, a hygiene kit and a gift card to purchase shoes.
