After-school and out-of-school programs

Las Familias del Pueblo, on the edge of the Garment District downtown Los Angeles, provides educational and social services to sweatshop workers and their children. Programs are organized around the belief that poor children can achieve at the same academic level as their more affluent peers when provided the same educational opportunities, and when these opportunities are supported by a strong after-school program. All children are English-language learners, all live in households surviving on incomes below the poverty line, and most live in low literacy homes.

Las Familias ensures knowledge acquired each year persists in subsequent years and creates a pathway to college. The kindergarten/first grade charter school has an extended year and day. First graders moving on to second grade, go to high-performing Brentwood Science Magnet, returning daily for the after-school program. Fifth graders go on to high-achieving junior-high charters, all of which have partner high schools.
