Mission

The mission of The Glendon Association is to save lives and enhance mental health by addressing the social problems of suicide, child abuse, violence, and troubled interpersonal relationships. The Glendon Association currently focuses its work on the following five themes, which we consider to be central to the health and happiness of both the individual and society as a whole:"Violence"Suicide and self-destructive behavior"Intimate Relationships"Parent-Child Relationships"SexualityOur staff reaches out to both the mental health community and the general public through a regular schedule of public presentations and training sessions. Glendon workshops have been conducted at universities, mental health facilities and hospitals throughout the local, national and world communities. Continuing Education Credits are available for most events to participants from a number of professional disciplines including physicians, psychologists, child care providers, MFTs, LCSWs, RNs, and MFCCs. The Glendon Association2021 Program AccomplishmentsPresentations Presented 7 free Webinars on mental health topics such as Understanding and Treating Suicide Risk, Powerful Tools to Fight Depression and Challenging Depression and 14 Continuing Education Webinars for a nominal fee for mental health professionals (with low fee option for non-professionals) on mental health topics such as A Practical Approach to Overcoming Illness Anxiety. Over 2100 individuals attended these Webinars. Presented 5 live and virtual workshops, locally and nationally on topics such as Suicide Assessment Training for child therapists. Approximately 250 individuals, the majority of them mental health professionals, attended these presentations.PublicationsPublished 18 blogs on Psychology Today and 27 blogs on PsychAlive on mental health topics such as " 6 Tips for Dealing With Your AngerX and The Key to Raising Independent, Capable Kids." The total number of reads as of October, 2022 for Psychology Today blogs published by our authors is 29,711,484.Publication of The Enemy Within by Robert W. Firestone in Journal of Humanistic Psychology in June 2021Finalized a new (second) edition of The Fantasy Bond (1985) titled Challenging the Fantasy Bond: A Search for Personal Identity and Freedom. Publication by APA Books was scheduled for February 2022.Community 1.Glendon Staff donated over 1500 volunteer consultation and response hours to the Santa Barbara Community and the Santa Barbara Response Network, www.sbresponsenetwork.org responding and consulting on critical traumatic incidents of violence and suicide and natural disasters in the Santa Barbara County community. 2.Glendon Staff donated over 1000 hours to provide consultation and referrals to at risk individuals and youth agencies, schools and mental health professionals providing services in person and on-line 3.Glendon Staff presented the following community education and training events: 4.Lead agency with the Out of the Darkness Suicide Walk for American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. www.afsp.org Over 200 attended to raise awareness for suicide prevention -virtually 5.Presented virtually at local schools and nonprofit agencies on suicide prevention and awareness. 6.Offered on-line trainings in psychological first aid response for the community and to mental health agencies 7.Participated as lead in the Community Wellness Team www.sbccwt.org -assisting in responses to crisis in the community during Covid 8.Founding member of the Mental Advisory Task Force a group responding to the mental health needs of youth in our community hosted by Santa Barbara City College 9.Media interviews and social media posts addressing mental health issues. Reached thousands of listeners and viewers on critical issues in mental health. 10.Supervised 5 UCSB and Westmont College interns on public education and community outreach Online/New MediaOver 955 individuals attended our in-depth online eCourses. Our website www.PsychAlive.org, which offers psychological resources for the general public, reached over 9 million visitors in 2021.Produced and published original content for PsychAlive on myriad psychological topics, including self-development, relationships, parenting, attachment, depression and suicide and violence prevention. Film 1.Produced numerous video clips for PsychAlive.org for YouTube and Instagram to elucidate relevant psychological concepts. These clips are made available to the public at no cost.2.Prepared video material for many presentations that were given locally, nationally and internationally.3.Edited Experts at Home interview with Dr. Robert Niemeyer on Coping with Grief. This interview was made available to the public and psychology professionals free of charge.4.Edited several webinars to improve their presentation.5.Duplicated in house copies of our 45 DVD programs for sale to the public and the psychology profession.6.Converted all our 45 videos and all the 28 Experts at Home videos to digital files and reduced the size of these files for easy access for our staff and end users.
