What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Reach Out and Read - Orange County
Reach Out and Read is a practice-based early-literacy program, where physicians give a developmentally-appropriate new book to children ages 6 months through 5 years old, during well-child visits. Physicians counsel families about the importance of reading aloud daily with their children, and promote the love of reading and books in the exam and waiting rooms. For many children we serve, the books provided at these visits are the only ones they have in their home. Parents report that they read aloud more often because their doctor has told them it is the single-most important thing they can do to help their child develop a love of books and reading, which in turn prepares them to enter school ready to learn. Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based program: children who participate in the program enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills. We currently have 60 participating practices/clinics, and provide books and counseling to over 75,000 young children.
No Child Hungry
No Child Hungry was developed to eliminate food insecurity in Orange County by distributing information about local food resources. Utilizing the Hunger Vital Sign, participants are screened to determine their food security status by responding "often true," "sometimes true," or "never" to the following statements: "Within the past 12 months we worried whether our food would run out before we got money to buy more" and "Within the past 12 months the food we bought just didn't last and we didn't have money to get more." If participants are considered food insecure, they are provided a credit-card sized Need Food card. This card is a simple and discreet resource printed with instructions in English and Spanish to subscribe to the program by sending a text message to the code on the card. Once a participant subscribes, they are connected to local food resources such as food pantries, soup kitchens, seasonal meal events, and Cal Fresh/WIC/ school lunch program enrollment assistance.
