Mission

Founded in 1921, Soroptimist International of the Americas is an international organization for business and professional women who provide volunteer service to their communities. About 45,000 Soroptimists in 20 countries and territories contribute time and financial support to community-based and international projects benefiting women and girls. Soroptimist International of the Americas is part of Soroptimist International, which comprises almost 95,000 members in about 120 countries.
The name, Soroptimist, means 'best for women,' and that's what the organization strives to achieve. Soroptimists are women at their best working to help other women to be their best.
Soroptimist members belong to local clubs, which determine the focus of service to their communities. Club projects range from renovating domestic violence shelters, to providing mammograms to low-income women, to sponsoring self-esteem workshops for teenage girls. In addition, Soroptimists participate in organization-wide programs that include the Women's Opportunity Awards, Soroptimist Club Grants for Women and Girls, the Soroptimist Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence, the Making a Difference for Women Award and the Violet Richardson Award. All projects seek to make life better for women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world.

Soroptimist International of Cypress

Cypress Soroptimist is the local club of a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment.

Soroptimist International of the Americas has about 1,300 clubs in 21 countries and territories who work to economically empower women and girls. Soroptimist clubs receive assistance in their volunteer efforts by participating locally in programs developed and sponsored by the Soroptimist organization. The local club Cypress Soroptimist concentrates their efforts in the surrounding Cypress area. Over our 38 year history we have given least $500,000 plus to our local community via scholarships, service awards and personal projects.

Soroptimist's Live Your Dream Awards program is a unique education award for women who provide the primary financial support for their families. The Live Your Dream Awards give women the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects.

Every year, Soroptimist distributes more than $2.8 million in education awards to about 1,700 women all over the world. Over half of our Live Your Dream Awards recipients are survivors of domestic violence, trafficking or sexual assault. Nearly all of the women and families we serve have overcome enormous obstacles including poverty, teen pregnancy, and drug or alcohol addiction. Live Your Dream Awards recipients may use the cash award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, tuition and transportation. Cypress Soroptimist grant recipients are students at Cypress College.

We also team with the Cypress Boys and Girls Club to conduct SmartGirls, a 10 week program for 6th graders. This popular program includes topics like self-esteem, bullying, body image, finances, community and more.

Cypress Soroptimist also honors local high school graduates with educational grants to help further their educational goals.

We are a small group of women, meeting twice monthly, organizing 1 large fundraiser, and 1 large social every year. With our growing and dedicated supporters we accomplish our Dream Programs.
