Summer Playwrights Festival

The annual Summer Playwrights Festival takes place with in-person staged readings over the course of ten days in July/August at The Road Mainstage on Magnolia Blvd in North Hollywood, California. As one of the largest staged reading festivals in the nation, SPF hosts a diverse gathering of playwrights from across the country and around the world. We receive hundreds of submissions for SPF and we welcome all, whether established/published authors or first time playwrights. SPF readings attract full houses of theatre savvy audiences including many artistic directors from other theatre companies eager to find challenging new works. Every performance is followed by a moderator led talkback with the playwright and director.

Population(s) Served

The Road is proud to begin its fourth year of Under Construction, a playwright’s group that develops socially and politically relevant voices and thoughts for the American stage.

The goal of Under Construction is simple: to leave with a deeper knowledge of playwriting through collaborating and sharing with one’s peers, and for each participant to create a new piece that is workshop ready. Playwrights are given live readings of their plays in our state-of-the-art theatre on Magnolia. Initial drafts will be read by fellow playwrights, but participants in this program will also have access to The Road’s ensemble of theatre artists for private & public readings, as well as support from the Artistic Team at The Road. The Road’s Under Construction Playwrights Lab 4 has 21 new playwrights after reading through over 350 submissions!

Population(s) Served

As part of our mission to foster the development of new plays, The Road hosts readings on Mondays at 7:30pm that are open to the public and tickets are pay what you can. Readings are followed by a talkback with the playwright (if available).

Population(s) Served

The Road now produces 3-4 shows per year at the Road on Magnolia. Depending on the season, we may produce shows in repertory, or “in rep,” both in an effort to bring more great work to life and to give our members more opportunities to be on stage! The Roads mission is to present plays not previously available to the Los Angeles public by producing works which introduce socially and/or politically relevant voices and thoughts to the American stage.

Population(s) Served

Started in 2018, Common Ground is a new performance series that showcases the talent of our diverse company as they perform original short stories on themes central to our mission. Common Ground is free to the public.
