What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Recognition Awards
The Out to Innovate (formerly known as NOGLSTP) Recognition Awards were established as a means of identifying, honoring, and documenting the contributions of outstandingLGBTQ+ science, engineering and technology professionals. This provides positive role models, as well as acknowledges an otherwise invisible professional.
Mentoring Program
Out to Innovate (formerly known as NOGLSTP) offers its student and early career members an opportunity to enroll in MentorNet's One-on-One e-mentoring program, and encourages its career professionals to serve as mentors. In addition, Out to Innovate supports Point Foundation Scholars majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics by offering free student memberships and mentor matching.
Scientific Symposia
Out to Innovate (formerly known as NOGLSTP) organizes scientific symposia for presentation at the national AAAS meetings. Each of these symposia involve educating the scientific community about LGBTQ+ issues, or explaining scientific research to the LGBTQ+ community. Some recent symposia have been:
1994: "Social, Ethical, and Scientific Perspectives of Biological Research on Sexual Orientation"
1997: "Assessing Health Care Needs of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Communities”
2002: ”Scientific & Ethical Perspectives on the Risks of HIV/AIDS Therapeutics”
2005: "Defining Male and Female: Biology and the Law”,
2007: "Electronic Mentoring Programs: Benefits to Minority Communities in Science and Technology”
2010: "Targeting HIV/AIDS Prevention: New Research and Future Avenues"
2019: "Persistence of Sexual Minorities in the STEM Pipeline – from Education to Workplace"
2020: "How to Counter Intersectional Bias in Social Media.”
Outreach
As advocates for workplace equality, Out to Innovate (formerly known as NOGLSTP)
Supports and sponsors LGBTQ+ events and networking at national professional society meetings, including American Chemical Society, American Association for Advancement of Science, Society for Women Engineers, Society for the Advancement of Chicano/Hispanic and Native American in Science, American Society for Engineering Education, the Joint Mathematical Society Meetings
Maintains advisory relationships with American Association for Engineering Education, DiscoverE, and other professional societies
Presents workshops and offers resources at Models of Pride, Out and Equal Workplace Summit, Out for Work career fairs, AAAS National Meeting Career Resources, and more
Out to Innovate™ Summit for LGBT People in STEM
Out to Innovate™ is a biennial career summit for LGBTQ+ people in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The goal of the Out to Innovate™ summit is to engage and retain marginalized STEM professionals and broaden participation of LGBT people in STEM careers. The summit does this by bringing together LGBTQ and ally STEM students (high school, college, graduate school and post-doctoral) with LGBTQ career professionals, academics and employers in the STEM community. The summit, held every other year since 2010, provides openly-LGBTQ accomplished STEM speakers, workshops, mentoring sessions, pan-science poster sessions, career resources, and a recognition awards ceremony.
Scholarships and Fellowships
The Out to Innovate Scholarship program was established in 2010. When funded, a $5000 scholarship is awarded to LGBTQ+ undergraduate and graduate STEM students for one academic year.
The Out to Innovate Career Development Fellowships was established in 2020 to support trans, non-binary, and intersex graduate students and post-docs. When funded, $3000-$5000 grants are awarded.
