Cancer Hope Foundation
Enhancing the lives of people affected by cancer.
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
According to the American Institute for Cancer Research’s 2018 Impact Report, 1,735,350 new cancer diagnoses were estimated in the U.S. in 2018. That amount joins the approximate 15.5 million current survivors. Moreover, there is a 1 in 3 probability of an individual developing invasive cancer at some point within his/her life. The vast majority of cancer cases affect adults; yet a disproportionate amount of cancer camps serve children. Cancer Hope Foundation therefore seeks to enhance the lives of both adults affected by cancer, as well as their families and loved ones (including kids) as we strive fulfill what continues to be a largely unmet need.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Camp Keepsake
Cancer Hope Foundation’s mission is to enhance the lives of people affected by cancer. Our Camp Keepsake program offers a cost-free weekend camp retreat, where children, adolescents, and adults affected by cancer receive support in an energetic and fun atmosphere (backed by the security of having medical attention close by). Camp Keepsake is a wonderful weekend retreat where adult cancer patients/survivors can go with up to five guests (cost free) including their family and close friends to spend time away from the often stressful routine of doctor visits and treatments. Camp offers a variety of fun activities and spa type amenities for people of all ages in a woodsy environment, always mindful of the safety and special needs of our campers. They can network, develop friendships, and learn more about cancer related topics. It is a place to laugh, cry and embrace life. A previous camper touched on the effectiveness of camp when stating that camp was as important as receiving medical treatment such as chemotherapy. We encourage you to see additional testimonials that can be viewed on our website.

Cancer Hope Foundation’s mission is to enhance the lives of people affected by cancer primarily through our special Camp Keepsake program. Camp Keepsake is a wonderful, COST FREE weekend retreat where adult cancer patients/survivors can go with up to five guests including their family and close friends to spend time away from the hectic and often stressful routine of doctor visits and treatments. It’s a place where those affected by cancer receive support in an energetic and fun atmosphere. It’s backed by the security of having medical personnel on site. Camp Keepsake offers a variety of fun, camp-related activities along with SPA-type amenities for the adult campers. It’s held in a woodsy camp environment where we are always mindful of the safety and special needs of our campers. Campers can network, develop friendships, and learn more about cancer related topics. It is a place to laugh, cry and embrace life together. A previous camper touched on the impact of camp when stating that attending camp was “as important as receiving medical treatment such as chemotherapy.” Other campers have compared camp to “being on a relaxing cruise but on land.” We encourage you to see additional testimonials that can be viewed on our website.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Cancer Hope Foundation's necessity lies within its charter of targeting adult cancer patients and its inclusion of the caregivers, family and friends. Most cancer camps benefit children dealing with cancer. We understand that if an adult has cancer, it also affects their spouse and children (for instance the parent might be away for treatments, she/he might not be able to tuck children in at night, or pick them up from school, along with many other affects). Similarly, a friend may drive the patient to treatments, to pick up prescriptions, or assist in a multitude of other facets. The Cancer Hope Foundation board of directors is committed to making the Camp Keepsake experience a very positive experience for “everyone" involved. Just imagine the value when the cancer patient and their close family and friends could attend a camp jointly. Overall, the patients themselves along with their family and friends could share the opportunity to connect in a special, memorable manner. They can take pictures, have some fun, celebrate life to the extent possible, enjoy spa type amenities such as a massages, facials, and manicures. Though we hope campers will live for another 100+ years, campers still can take camp time to get personal matters in order, and sadly if needed, they can also say good byes to loved ones they may not be fortunate enough to see on a regular basis. They can develop a network of support from others, including other patients, their families and friends, who may be going through similar experiences and have a need or desire to share their inner most feelings and emotions in a safe and comfortable environment.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Without a doubt, Cancer Hope Foundation's strength lies in our volunteer base, lead by a great volunteer board of directors. Our president, Christopher Roos, possesses his doctorate in organizational leadership. He has directed our camp since its inception 17 years ago. Other board members and volunteers also have significant experience in both the cancer and other related fields. Camp Keepsake has various doctors and nurses, paramedics, and emts who have or continue to volunteer. Each camp session we have various return as well as new volunteers which also assist us with all aspects involved with running our successful camp weekend. For example we often have volunteers for manicures, facials, acupuncture, massages, hair cutting, chiropractic services, and other spa type amenities. Additionally we often have other volunteers for crafts, yoga, hikes, singing, relaxation techniques, and other fun or educational activities. Lastly we often have volunteers for child care, support/sharing groups, and most importantly our counselors/hosts.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Camp Keepsake has developed greatly since running our first annual weekend camp session in 2001 which we had 33 campers in attendance. Our 2006 weekend camp session served 117 campers including 42 adult cancer patients/survivors. 2007 marked our first year for holding two back to back weekend camp sessions in which we served 151 total campers! We also ran two sessions in 2008 and served 155 campers. With the challenges of the economy, our board decided to scale back and run only one camp in 2009 though we again served 117 campers. Our 2010 camp served 125 campers and our 2011-2014 camps were similar in number. Our recent camp sessions have served around 140+ campers each.
