What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Half of the world's children are growing up without the nurturing care, early education, and stimulation that science shows is crucial to their physical, socio-emotional, and cognitive development and that is likely to determine the quality of, and prospects for, their entire lives. When millions of children fail to reach their potential, the effects are devastating – to the individual children and to society as a whole. In the developed world, the field of early education is evolving from its original focus on simple pre-primary education to a growing appreciation of the extent to which family, community, and broader societal factors affect child health and development. But little to none of this forward thinking is geared towards finding practical applications for the world's most vulnerable children in the developing world.

Our programs

Child Nurture & Enrichment Programs

Founded in 1998 to provide care for institutionalized children in China, OneSky is now working toward large-scale, practical application of its innovative yet proven early childhood intervention models in multiple developing countries.

The OneSky Approach is China’s national standard for the care of institutionalized children. At its heart are three simple, replicable programs that offer young children the responsive care and loving attention they need in order to thrive: Infant Nurture, Preschool and Loving Family.

OneSky's Village Program offers an affordable and replicable approach to mitigating the damage done to China's "economic orphans" whose parents leave their impoverished villages to find jobs in faraway cities. OneSky serves all the children in these villages where, at any given time, up to 85% of the parents are away.

The OneSky Approach for Children of Factory Workers offers a replicable model care and early learning center (ELC) to benefit Vietnam's children of factory workers whose parents cannot find quality daycare during their long hours at work. These families live in or near industrial zone tenements, and their small children urgently need a safe place to play and learn.

OneSky has recently begun working in Mongolia, in Ulaanbaatar, where nearly half the population live in "ger" districts. To help children failing to thrive there, OneSky has opened up a new Family Center to serve as a pilot project.

OneSky's early intervention models address the needs of at-risk children in a variety of circumstances. To date, OneSky has trained thousands of caregivers to provide life-changing care that has directly impacted the lives of more than 200,000 at-risk children and indirectly, millions.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

OneSky believes that unlimited potential waits inside every child, and that it should be every child's birthright to have full access to nurturing care and quality early education, especially in the formative years. We aim to change social systems that harm vulnerable children across Asia.

OneSky develops early childhood care and education models (ECCE) to benefit young children at risk, then trains and mentors communities, teachers, and caregivers as they take the models to scale. Our models for change are all based on guiding principles of science-based responsive practice, trained adults, respectful community, nurturing and healthy environments, supportive local leadership, and collaboration. The OneSky Approach includes work in:

• Orphanages – designed to improve the standards of care for orphaned and abandoned children living in institutions.
• Villages – designed to help heal disintegrating rural villages affected by the loss of young workers and mitigate the damage done to young children left-behind.
• Factories – designed to close the gap between the needs of young children and their factory worker parents for safe and nurturing childcare and early education.
• OneSky Centre – designed to create a central hub for collaboration, modeling, and training of trainers, aiming to lead social innovation and transformative change in the lives of vulnerable children throughout Asia.

With 20 years experience running cost-effective, successful early childhood care and education programs in Asia, OneSky knows how to win the trust of government, how to bring together the adults who are responsible for children's welfare, how to show caregivers they have the power to make a difference, and how to gently transform broken systems and practices to benefit children the world has forgotten. OneSky also has a strong leadership and field team with over 30 years experience in the field of early childhood care and education, program design, non-profit organization management, fundraising, finance, communications, marketing, and technology.

OneSky has directly reached over 274,000 children, trained over 75,000 caregivers, and indirectly impacted millions more. The OneSky Approach is now China's national standard for the care of institutionalized children. In China, OneSky has reached nearly all orphanages and scaled programs to reach all 31 provinces in the county. We are now scaling our work to Vietnam and Mongolia.
