Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The Foundation was created in a response to the urgency and complexity of the issues we now face and the growing and exponential impact our actions have on each other and our planet.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
The Roddenberry Fellowship
Calling all innovators, community leaders, and changemakers working in the areas of civil rights, environmental protection, immigration and refugee rights, LGBTQIA and women’s rights, and health and wellness. The Roddenberry Fellowship is a 12-month program that offers Fellows $50,000 to either take an existing initiative to the next level or launch a new initiative.
The Roddenberry Foundation is seeking individuals from across the country, from cities big and small who are working to reimagine a future that serves the many, not just the few. We’re looking for innovative leaders who are speaking out, organizing, building community, and leading in ways that make a tangible difference.
The deadline to apply is 5 PM PST on Friday, May 7, 2021.
Catalyst+ (7 Million Strong)
By Nov. 3, 2020 seven million young people of color will have turned 18 since the 2016 presidential election. These seven million first-time voters are one of the most powerful, untapped bloc of citizens in the country. Their voices — and votes — need to be heard.
The Roddenberry Foundation will make grants between $500-$10,000 to organizations, team, and individuals across the country.
The Catalyst Fund
The Catalyst Fund makes grants between $2,500–$15,000 to anyone, anywhere in the world who has an early-stage idea or project that addresses pressing global challenges.
The Roddenberry Prize
The $1M Roddenberry Prize is a call for big, bold solutions from anyone, anywhere that address the challenges of an unpredictable and evolving global landscape. Four game-changing and innovative solutions will each receive $250,000 for their work in one of the following fields: Education, Science, Environment, and Humanity.
The Roddenberry Foundation welcomes ideas from all corners of the globe. Eligible candidates for the Prize may be individuals, teams of individuals, nonprofit organizations, or social enterprises with a maximum budget of $10 million.
NOTE: The Roddenberry Prize is running in 2021.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Gene Roddenberry, creator of the Star Trek series, brought to his audiences meaningful and thought-provoking science fiction to “think, question, and challenge the status quo” with the intention of creating “a brighter future”. His work has touched countless lives and continues to entertain and inspire audiences worldwide. In 2010, Gene’s son Rod established the Roddenberry Foundation to build on his father’s legacy and philosophy of inclusion, diversity, and respect for life to drive social change and meaningfully improve the lives of people around the world.
Our work is organized in three primary ways: The Catalyst Fund is a small grants program focused on early-stage, unconventional ideas that have the potential for disruptive change. The Roddenberry Fellowship is an annual program that provides a select group of activists, leaders, advocates, and changemakers the resources to devote an entire year to their ideas. The Roddenberry Prize is a biennial competition to crowd-source innovative solutions to issues that demand an immediate, bold, and global response. Together, these interconnected initiatives offer opportunities for original thinkers and innovators from all walks of life to pursue significant, lasting change.
