Mission

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is an independent think tank championing sustainable solutions to 21st century problems. Our mission is to promote human development and environmental sustainability. Our big-picture view allows us to address the root causes of some of the greatest challenges facing our planet today—ecological destruction, social exclusion, unfair laws and economic rules, a changing climate. Through research, analysis and knowledge sharing, we identify and champion sustainable solutions that make a difference. We report on international negotiations, conduct rigorous research, and engage citizens, businesses and policy-makers on the shared goal of developing sustainably.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Economic Law & Policy: Rethinking our economies for sustainable and inclusive development

Our experts focus on areas of economic policy-making essential to sustainable development, including investment, trade, public procurement and infrastructure finance and sustainability standards.

Our sector-specific work focuses on agriculture and mining in developing countries, given the urgency of the reforms needed and the impact on sustainable development.

IISD also serves as the secretariat to the Intergovermental Forum on Mining, Minerals Metals and Sustainable Development, a member-driven organization providing governments the opportunity to work collectively to achieve their sustainable mining goals.

Population(s) Served

Our experts offer practical guidance to help authorities choose the right system of electricity generation and reduce consumption of fossil-based transport fuels, and to implement international climate change commitments.

We work side-by-side with local partners for less costly, more equitable energy systems. Aware of international policy developments, we identify wasteful practices, encourage new thinking, engage civil society and support policy reform.

Population(s) Served

Just as water flows across borders, our work stretches across sectors and nations. We are experts in large-basin management, and addressing complex nexus issues such as the interactions between watersheds and climate change, or water, energy and food.

IISD focuses on policy and programming solutions for governments, civil society and industry that protect and enhance the natural environment, while also improving socioeconomic well-being. We conduct economic analyses and hydrologic assessments so that governments can consider different options before making final decisions. And we support the management of watersheds across national boundaries, bringing together all relevant sectors and stakeholders.

Our policy work is informed by scientific research conducted at IISD Experimental Lakes Area, a one-of-a-kind outdoor laboratory that allows us to conduct safe experiments on whole lakes in a way no other research site in the world can do.

Population(s) Served

Our multidisciplinary team of policy researchers works with governments, civil society, communities and businesses to help them manage climate- and conflict-related risks.

Shocks and stresses from climate change, environmental degradation, rapid demographic shifts and conflict are placing unprecedented pressures on ecosystems and livelihoods, potentially overwhelming existing capacities to respond.

In this uncertain context, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals will mean redesigning economic policies, development programs and business strategies to perform under a variety of new conditions.

IISD is a pioneer in participatory risk management. Our experts were among the first to develop tools that assess the links between environmental change and human security. We train practitioners around the world – from project managers to peacekeepers – to address the environmental sources of conflict. We turn assessments into action by supporting governments to devise climate adaptation strategies.

IISD also serves as the secretariat for the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Global Network, has partnered in the development and use of the Community-based Risk Screening Tool – Adaptation and Livelihoods (CRiSTAL) planning tool and its specialized versions, and provides secretariat support for the Prairies Regional Adaptation Collaborative.

Population(s) Served

IISD provides information and analysis that supports the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the 17 SDGs.

Our Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Knowledge Program seeks to enhance SDG implementation through our information sharing and dissemination work on the SDG Knowledge Hub and by convening and enabling SDG practitioners in the Geneva 2030 Ecosystem. We work at the local level to establish community indicator systems and assess how Canada can measure its comprehensive wealth to move “beyond GDP” as the fundamental measure of societal progress.

In addition, we have specific initiatives aimed at understanding the costs of action and inaction including, analyzing the cost to end hunger (implement SDG 2) globally, and valuing the true cost of pollution in Canada.
