Mission

To make music and all its benefits, available to everyone, regardless of physical, mental or emotional disabilities, socio-economic background, religious or ethnic background or gender. We feel strongly about bringing music to the community, to schools, to nursing homes and day centers, and to people on the periphery geographically, culturally or economically.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Music Education for Girls

From Early Childhood Intro to Music classes through to a BA in music, we provide training in a wide variety of instruments, music history and theory, conducting, improvisation, composition, and performance to over 300 girls and young women.

Population(s) Served

We serve children with physical, emotional, and learning disabilities, Autism, Down's Syndrome, CP, mental retardation and developmental delays, as well as victims of terror and abuse. 60 children receive either individual music therapy or are mainstreamed into the Conservatory’s regular classes. Those in therapy are offered opportunities to participate in a mainstreamed group activity (such as a concert or music circle, etc). Mainstreamed children are assigned a mentor from among the older students in the conservatory. Parents of children in either program receive the availability of an on-site social worker for free of charge counseling on an as-needed basis. Children who receive treatment often avoid placement in special education tracks and succeed in being mainstreamed in the general education system. Their treatment helps avoid more serious emotional, behavioral, and social complications later on in life. Ours is the only such  program in Jerusalem.

Population(s) Served

The conswervatory maintains 3 orchestras: "Zmora"- the only professional all female orchestra in Israel; "CameRon" student orchestra, performing classical and Jewish music; and the accordion orchestra "AccordiRon". Community concerts and free open houses are held on a regular basis in addition to performances in nursing homes and explained concerts in schools, as part of the goal of enriching the cultural life of Jerusalem residents. We also perform for free at charity events, and bring music to areas affected by terror attacks, to bring some joy to the residents.

Population(s) Served

Ron-Shulamit offers the only B.Ed. program in music education (in conjunction with the prestigious Levinsky Institute) for religious women and employment opportunities as teachers in the conservatory or other schools, as musicians in “” – the only professional all female string orchestra in Israel, or as founders of music programs around the country. Our students are taught not only music but also leadership skills to become agents of social and cultural change. They receive the tools/guidance for bringing music programs to areas where children have few enrichment programs. In the few years that our BA program has existed, our graduates have already gone on to open 5 music programs in areas on the economic/ cultural periphery. This is a true measure of success, and a realization of our school's overarching goal, that of bringing the benefits of music education and enrichment to the religious sector of society, which hitherto lacked them.

Population(s) Served

Jewish communities over the centuries have developed a treasure trove of beautiful music, unique to the Jewish experience. But the vagaries of Jewish history, with its dispersals and upheavals, have threatened this precious heritage with extinction. Our "Jewish Music Renaissance" Project strives to rescue and bring back to life the music of Jewish communities of yore. We research, record and perform traditional pieces including forgotten Jewish folk music, ethnic songs, and Hassidic nigunim, making them available to the current generation of listeners. To mark our 100th anniversary, our orchestra and girl’s choir performed “Seven Voices,” by Israel Edelson, a special arrangement based on moving tunes dating back to the disciples of the Rabbi from Berdichev. Our goal is to put out vocal and instrumental compositions of Jewish folk pieces from all ethnic and religious streams of Judaism and make these classic pieces of Jewish music a part of our modern lives.
