What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Our Hands on houses project seeks to address the social marginalization and economic deprivation faced by many widows in rural communities in Southern India - as well as the limited employment opportunities for both men and women in these communities.

Hands on Houses, India

We team up with local leaders to provide basic housing in rural communities, and investigate better housing methods using local materials. Our work is focussed on uplifting the marginalised - in India, we work mainly with widows.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

- Provide homes to marginalized & struggling families, especially widows
- Develop ways to build better houses blending technology and locally available materials and resources
- Investigate potential employment-generating social enterprises

- Partner with local community leaders
- Develop and prototype different low-cost building technologies
- Involve local builders, craftspeople & suppliers
- Identify, connect with and serve marginalised people as house recipients
- Engage with and mobilise a wide network of supporters

- Strong global network of supporters and collaborators
- Strong local connections with India community leaders and building professionals
- Experience in construction and R&D (our CEO is an engineer)
- Organisational capabilities in financial management, project management and communications
- 10 years' experience building low cost housing in South India.

We've provided over 200 homes to families in India.
We're working successfully with local religious, community, development and political leaders
We've identified a number of potential technologies. We're still testing and prototyping these.
We're looking at setting up a social enterprise to generate employment.
