What we aim to solve
College and university programs cannot provide the extensive range of learning experiences necessary for graduates to become effective public school educators. Once students graduate, meet their state’s certification requirements, and are employed, they learn through experience. As in all professions, new teachers and principals take years to gain the skills they need to be effective in their roles. Th e complexity of teaching is so great that one-third of teachers leave the profession within three years and 50% leave within five years (Ingersoll, 2003). Even experienced teachers confront great challenges each year, including changes in subject content, new instructional methods, advances in technology, changed laws and procedures, and student learning needs. Educators who do not experience effective professional development do not improve their skills, and student learning suffers.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Gift of Happiness
Our teachers are the lifeline and frontline for our young leaders. Without them, our students don’t have a chance. Thank you to each of our teachers for the hard work that you do.
As with our mission, our foundation wants to do a small part to create synergy that brings happiness to these great leaders in our schools.
We only get one chance to prepare children for a world none of us can possibly predict. What will you do with that one chance?
We will be working with other 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations and local companies to bring happiness to teachers and schools in the Lowcountry. There are already great organizations in our community doing these great things so we do not want to duplicate their efforts but rather support them. Some of the things that we will be bringing happiness to teachers include coffee, donuts/bagels, pizza, spa treatments, school supplies, etc. All random acts of kindness that will be a surprise to every teacher / school.
Professional Development
We believe that it is never too early in our career to think about professional development. Investing in our teachers and educators is the best way to ensure both career growth and academic growth for our young leaders. This is why we are covering the costs of professional development in our tri-county school districts.
Going through professional development courses will give our teachers / educators the skills they can use immediately, but more importantly it will help them grow professionally over time. A common misconception about professional development is that it only helps the individual. It’s important to remember investing in our teachers / educators will also help their students.
The more professional development teachers get, the more likely students are to succeed.
Whether it is a workshop, a conference, or a meeting, all teachers should take part in some form of professional development to set themselves up for success and we’re covering the costs.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We believe that it is never too early in our career to think about professional development. Investing in our teachers and educators is the best way to ensure both career growth and academic growth for our young leaders.
Even though professional development can take up precious time, here are a few reasons why professional development matters:
It sets teachers / educators up for success
It expands their knowledge base
It’s a confidence booster
Teachers / educators meet other teachers
It helps teachers / educators set & achieve their goals
Teachers / educators become a better teacher
Going through professional development courses will give teachers / educators skills they can use immediately, but more importantly it will help them grow professionally over time. A common misconception about professional development is that it only helps the individual. It’s important to remember investing in an educator will also help their students.
The more professional development teachers get, the more likely students are to succeed.
Whether it is a workshop, a conference, or a meeting, all teachers should take part in some form of professional development to set themselves up for success and we’re taking the cost of entry barrier out of the equation. It is our goal to cover the cost of professional development for teachers in our South Carolina region.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Effective professional development enables educators to develop the knowledge and skills they need to address students’ learning challenges. To be effective, professional development requires thoughtful planning followed by careful implementation with feedback to ensure it responds to educators’ learning needs. Educators who participate in professional development then must put their new knowledge and skills to work. Professional development is not effective unless it causes teachers to improve their instruction or causes administrators to become better school leaders.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The Larry & Rebecca Collett Foundation goal is to provide professional development for a minimum of 500 educators each year by covering the costs of the training through donations, scholarships, and certified training.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
