Historically, living with sickle cell disease meant dying well before adulthood. So, there is a lack of vision for the future. The conversations around sickle cell have been limited and reproductive health hasn't been prioritized.

Storytelling and Awareness Initiative

We are empowering individuals with sickle cell disease to get comfortable talking about reproductive health issues that have historically been ignored or stigmatized. We will be having one-on-one interviews about topic including puberty, priapism, sex, fertility, and more. We will also be interviewing reproductive health advocates outside of the sickle cell community.

Our organization wants to ensure that individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease participate in informed and shared decision making around sexual and reproductive health, including family planning. We want to equip the sickle cell community with a reproductive health life plan.

1. We will develop curriculums for sickle cell warriors, their families, and their healthcare providers
2. We will work to become a collaborative with other organizations and entities who align with our mission
3. We will launch a storytelling series for individuals to share their personal reproductive health journeys
4. We will have support groups (curative therapies, priapism, infertility, partners, and expectant mothers)

Ms. Teonna Lanay Woolford

Teonna Woolford was born and raised in Baltimore Maryland. She has always been talkative, friendly, and full of life. She has Sickle Cell Anemia SS and has faced numerous health complications as a result. A true fighter at heart, she has recovered from numerous complications including bilateral hip replacements, a failed bone marrow transplant, many pain crises, and several other complications. She has a zeal for effecting change throughout the Sickle Cell community and understands the realities of those impacted by the disease. While sickle cell has been a huge part of Teonna’s life, she does her best not to let sickle cell define who she is. Teonna has been blessed to sit at some incredible tables and contributed to publications and working committees with the American Society of Hematology and NHLBI. She is currently majoring in business. She is also the Co-founder and CEO of a new nonprofit organization, The Sickle Cell Reproductive Health Education Directive.

Kim Smith-Whitley

Dr. Kim Smith- Whitley is a board certified pediatric hematologist with a focus on research and clinical work centered on sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait. Currently EVP and head of research and development at Global Blood Therapeutics (GBT), focusing on addressing the needs of the sickle cell community and developing therapies for this underserved patient population. Most recently served as clinical director of hematology and director of the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Former Chief Medical Officer of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA). Recently served as a member of the National Institutes of Health, National Heart, Lung and Blood Advisory Council and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s Addressing Sickle Cell Disease Committee. Author of more than 80 peer-reviewed papers.
