In Orlando, 14.2% of residents and 21.1% of children live with food insecurity. Food insecurity affects mental and physical well-being and the ability to think and succeed at work and in school. We work to make a real impact in our community by bringing delivered food relief to those in crisis while helping lift them out of their circumstances. Through our Feeding Communities Program, we deliver over 240 grocery boxes that feed a family for a week (fresh vegetables, frozen meat, and dry goods) to children, families and seniors each week through partnerships with churches, counselors, schools, and neighbors. Through our Empowering Lives Program, we work to connect our participants with employment, housing, and health needs assistance to help bring them to food and housing security.

Empowering Lives Program

Servant's Heart Ministry is a faith-based organization established to feed children, seniors and other vulnerable individuals who suffer food insecurity. Through community partnerships, we provide weekly, healthy, weekly grocery boxes and connections with community resources, empowering people to grow and thrive in their neighborhoods and offering opportunities for people to serve.

Each week, through volunteer Community Partners, we deliver a week's worth of groceries to the doorstep of those identified as most vulnerable in our community - those who, whether through illness, age, homelessness, or job loss, lack basic nutritional needs. Our Community Partners are dedicated to bringing vital nutrition to our recipients and forming relationships with those we serve, getting to know their needs, and then connecting them with our Resource Manager, who helps them navigate through community resources. In this way, our goal is to lift our recipients out of their situation.

Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter baskets are the traditional seasonal gifts to those in need. Our purpose is to offer encouragement and hope for families during the holidays when most Americans are enjoying a time of sharing and giving. We kick-off this program in early October with our Annual Turkey and Ham Round-Up and Food Drive campaigns. Fiscal donations are encouraged for the purchase of gift cards to be distributed in lure frozen turkeys due to insufficient frozen storage capacity and the inability of some of our clients to safely handle potentially hazardous foods.  Companies, schools and individuals are invited to hold food drives to gather canned and packaged foods to complete all the trimmings of a traditional Holiday Basket. This community service has facilitated the distribution of over 600 Holiday Baskets over the last year.

Seniors are important to us! Most seniors who receive Weekly Food Support Bags are caregivers for their grandchildren. Often times they are struggling to provide meals not only for themselves but these children. In the State of Florida, only 35% of seniors access available government resources.Our hunger solution is to help seniors find government resources on money, housing, health, consumer protection, and more. By partnering with Community ACCESS Network, we are able to promote economic self-sufficiency for the elderly. Our volunteers visit the disabled and shut-in elderly and along with bringing weekly groceries, work to: Provide means necessary for seniors to apply for benefits, check the status of an application or report a change. We also work to connect and seniors to additional resources and help them navigate the process of obtaining help to improve their lives.

In 2023, Servant's Heart Ministry initiated a program we call Bridge the Gap which serves to provide a one time assistance to those who are on the upward trajectory toward independence through employment but have found themselves in an unexpected crisis often due to illness or injury. Through this program, a participant can receive a one time financial assistance in areas such as rent assistance or help with medical bills. Because housing costs are currently high, we often bridge the gap for participants who need a little extra temporary help to stay on course toward economic independence.

We have partnered with Discovery Church in their Community Resource Center providing weekly grocery boxes for their food pantry. Begun in 2023, Discovery Church founded a Community Resource Center for the population in their area close to food deserts. This resource center seeks to help those in need to connect to resources and employment while sending them home with a week's worth of groceries. Servant's Heart Ministry stepped in to partner with Discovery Church in providing perishable and nonperishable weekly food to help those in need who come to their center.

Our main program, Feeding Communities, seeks to provide weekly perishable and nonperishable groceries to children, families and seniors experiencing food insufficiency. Through our Community Partner model, volunteer Community Partners bring weekly groceries for a period of 6-months to a year to those identified as experiencing hardship. Community Partners bring delivered groceries consisting of 5 pounds of meat, 5 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables, canned goods, pasta and cereal, eggs and bread each week, connecting with those they serve and learning how to help them with additional community resources such as housing assistance, employment assistance and medical/insurance help.

Conway Cares is a program established to help children in the food desert area of Orlando by serving school age children with weekend food. Often economically disadvantaged children receive breakfast and dinner at school but go without on the weekends. Conway Cares seeks to serve the most vulnerable children with additional nourishment in the summer and on weekends.

Our most compelling goal is to bring weekly food relief to vulnerable children, seniors, families, and individuals living in food deserts in Central Florida and through our Feeding Communities Program, increase our food distribution to those in our community who need it most.
Our secondary goal is to increase the number of those we serve through community resource connection. Our Empowering Lives Program works to lift our recipients out of their situations through connection with community resources, assisting them in housing, health, job placement, education, budget assistance, income support programs, and senior advocacy programs. Our full-time Resource Manager liaisons with Community Partners to act as a bridge, helping our recipients find and navigate community resources. Through volunteers, Community Partners, grocery alliances, long term donors, committed grantors, and a passionate Board of Directors, Servant's Heart Ministry is confident in achieving these goals to better serve the community.

We are focused and resourceful in our strategies. In our Feeding Communities Program, Community Partners who identify those most in need and then deliver directly to the doorstep of those we serve, come to know our recipients and their needs, and seek to empower, encourage, and connect our recipients to community resources. Community Partners liaison with our Resource Manager, who connects our recipients to community resources and helps them navigate through the process of obtaining resources that will lift them out of their situation and empower them to become independent. We are resourceful in our management, diligent in our reporting, and rely on wonderful volunteers and staff who share our vision to make a lasting impact in our community, helping those most vulnerable. We are purposeful in bringing awareness of food insecurity to our community. Through social media, consistent donor relations and a growing and successful Hearts Against Hunger 5K, we seek donors and volunteers in Central Florida who share our mission and will help us achieve our goals of increasing the number of those to whom we bring food relief and resource connection.

We operate in a 2400 square foot warehouse/office space and with a fully equipped food pantry consisting of 5 large, side by side commercial freezers and 3 large side by side refrigerators to safely store perishable food brough into our warehouse. We have a 16 ft refrigerated truck to pick up perishable and nonperishable food from Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and area Grocery Store Alliances such as Aldi's, Publix, Walmart, and Fresh Market. In our current operating space, we can distribute a maximum of 250 grocery boxes per week, over 350,000 pounds of food per year. Due to an increasing need in the Orlando area, we are implementing a building fund campaign to rent or purchase a 4500-5000 sq. foot warehouse/office space to meet the growing demand. While working towards this goal, we are expanding our distribution through new partnerships such as with Discovery Church Community Resource Center and Food Pantry. Through this partnership with Discovery Church and Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, we provide the perishable and nonperishable food and train their volunteers in food safety. Our grocery boxes provide 5 pounds of meat, 5 pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables, bread and a bag of staples which include rice or pasta, 2 cans of vegetables, 2 cans of fruit, cereal or oatmeal, canned tuna or chicken or peanut butter, and canned or fresh beans, enough food to feed a family for a week.
We enjoy an active and committed base of volunteers who show up every week to help in the warehouse or deliver food directly to those we serve. We are unique in that, through our Community Partners, we deliver the weekly food boxes directly to our recipients, many of whom are not able to come to a food pantry to obtain needed food. We are grateful for committed partners such as Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and area Grocery Alliance Partner stores, who through purchased and donated food, provide weekly groceries to Servant's Heart Ministry to distribute to those who need it most. Our passionate Board of Directors serve to raise awareness of food insecurity in Central Florida and are active in fundraising and grant writing to ensure we have consistent and committed partner donors who share our mission to help over 400 struggling individuals in our community each week.es.

We have grown from serving 9 families in the year 2000 to serving over 250 families each week in 2023 with delivered grocery boxes. This increase in growth is a sign that there is a continuing need in the community for food and resources to be delivered in a way that is unique to Servant's Heart Ministry. By delivering food to families in need, we are reaching a population struggling with limited to no transportation, disabilities and special needs, elderly care, single working mothers, displaced refugees, and disaster survivors. During the 2020 pandemic, we added 120 seniors, delivering grocery boxes to those who, due to the Covid-19 virus, needed to shelter. In 2021, we added a Resource Manager to our staff who connects our recipients with needed community resources whether it be assistance with housing, medical or job placement. Our goal is always to empower people to move from food insecurity to food security and ultimately to independence, so they can serve others who find themselves in hardship. Our progress in 2023 included adding a Bridge the Gap Program to help those who achieved financial stability but who through unforeseen circumstances find themselves in a crisis needing one-time financial aid. We extended our outreach by partnering with Discovery Church in their Community Resource Center, filling the gap with perishable and nonperishable food for their pantry. Those in need in their area obtain resource help at the Discovery CRC and go home with a week's grocery box. We added a yearly fundraiser in 2020, Hearts Against Hunger 5K that brings awareness of food insecurity to Orlando while raising funds to support our program. Our 5K has grown to an attendance of 300 runners. As we see continued need in the community and that our unique program directly helps the most vulnerable through delivered groceries and connection, we are committed to enlarging our efforts, acquiring a larger warehouse space to hold more vital food to distribute to those in Central Florida suffering economic hardship, and food insecurity and hiring a bilingual assistant to our Resource Manager, connecting more to resources that can move them to economic independence.

Executive Director

Mr. Chip C. Hanna

Chip Hanna started with Servant's Heart Ministry as a Community Partner serving as a volunteer to bring weekly food to families in need.  He graduated from the University of Central Florida with a degree in business administration.    He has developed a strong foundation in business development and entrepreneurship and plans to utilize these skills to identify areas of management that have not yet been met at the organization.  As Executive Director, he intends to further identify pockets in the community where people are at risk of hunger, and collaborate with the Board of Directors for additional fundraising for additional outreach support.  He is looking to identify a courageous group of volunteers with a "servant's heart" founded and backed by community partners to serve and lend a hand to struggling families.  He will continue his education at UCF in the Center for Public and Nonprofit Management and through a membership with the Edyth Bush Institute for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership.
