What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The Greater Naples community has grown since our founding in 1953 from 2,000 residents to over 400,000 due to increasing development. This growth, which has accelerated in the past three decades, has expanded he demand for community support in areas that fulfill our mission throughout Collier County and beyond. Projections indicate this growth trend will continue. Support requests through our grants program, partnerships with other area non-profit organizations and our continuing support of our unique relationship with the Naples Botanical Garden have also increased. In order to meet these needs, we have expanded our membership and Provisional member program. We are now actively investigating new avenues of funding to continue our current programs and develop new community-wide partnerships, collaborations and educational opportunities in horticulture, design and improving our environment.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Naples Flower Show

The Naples Flower Show™ is a joint venture between the Naples Garden Club™ and the Naples Botanical Garden. The annual Show is a spring-time tradition and part of our long-standing commitment to foster appreciation and understanding of horticulture, design, and the environment to the Greater Naples community. This event strengthens our community connections, promotes new discoveries, provides learning experiences and encourages new endeavors. It is the largest juried flower show in Southwest Florida welcoming over 5,000 visitors from all over Florida to this 2 day event. Attendees enjoy floral designs, exotic plants, temporary gardens, photography, educational displays and daily demonstrations and lectures. The Garden Market, located in the Event Plaza Tent, features local vendors displaying garden and botanically related products and a diverse array of tropical and specialty plants for your home and garden.

Population(s) Served

Naples Garden Club™ general meetings are diverse. Horticulture, floral design and environmental topics are covered by nationally and internationally-known speakers and Naples experts who share exciting new points of view. These meetings are open to the public and guests are welcome.

At least five horticulture workshops are held each year. At each workshop, a member or visiting horticulturist gives a short lecture or tour. Each month, several floral design workshops are held at the Garden Club office. Instruction is given in applying the principles and elements of design as stated in the National Garden Club’s Handbook. Workshops are open to members only.

Our accredited flower show judges participate in the Florida Judges Council, flower show schools and symposiums and judge numerous shows each year.

Member workshops: Educational workshops offer NGC members the opportunity to have a hands-on, in-depth experience to learn more about floral design, horticulture, the environment, and Flower Show preparation. New members, Provisionals, are required to complete a 6 month training and instructional program to become active members. Until 2004 these workshops were held in our offices at the Naples Depot. Expansion of the museum led to an opportunity to move to a new office in the Naples Botanical Garden strengthening our partnership with this organization.

Workshops and demonstrations to visitors: In 2010 the Club partnered with the Naples Botanical Garden to establish and Idea Garden. Members actively maintain and create "ideas" such as container gardens, living walls, espaliered trees, and topiaries to inspire visitors and home gardeners. Weekly educational demonstrations are planned from November - March each year and are very popular with many repeat attendees.

From one-time civic improvements such as palm trees for the Sugden Theater courtyard to our long-standing commitment to the Naples Botanical Garden since its inception, our legacy can be seen in almost every corner of Naples. The projects have varied widely from building and restoring trails, creating numerous gardens for children, seniors, Naples public schools, and the Naples Zoo to using native plants in landscaping and installation of sea oats on the beach to prevent erosion. One of the many notable contributions was the club’s initiative in coordination with the City of Naples in the 1980’s to save the landscaped 6th Street medians from conversion to parking. The Club received an award from the City, and “Naplescape” became a landscape preservation model for Collier County and Southwest Florida. In 2010 he Club established an Endowment for a research fellowship in plant science at Florida Gulf Coast University.

In 2010 he Club established an Endowment for an annual research scholarship to provide a fellowship in plant science to a Florida Gulf Coast University. Students work on a specific project at the Naples Botanical Garden Kapnick Education Center.

In 2010 the Club partnered with the Naples Botanical Garden to establish and Idea Garden. It is centrally located within the Naples Botanical Garden and has welcomed thousands of visitors who have enjoyed a relaxing walk through a garden of “Ideas” ! Green-thumbed enthusiasts discover a mix of colorful native plants and flowers, works-in-progress, and attractive design features showing that all home gardeners can find success by using plants in creative ways. Members actively maintain and create "ideas" such as container gardens, living walls, espaliered trees, and topiaries to inspire visitors and home gardeners. Weekly educational demonstrations are planned by members from November - March each year and are so popular that there are many repeat attendees!

Our annual, perennially sold-out House & Garden Tour is our major fundraiser. As our need for funding has expanded over the past 65 years this event has developed into an intricately planned production requiring complex coordination begun a year in advance. Originally staffed by 33 members it is now conducted by all 250 members who contribute to the preparation and staff this event. Attendees from all over Florida purchase timed tickets for the Tour boarding buses to view four distinctive, luxury homes and gardens in downtown Naples prestigious neighborhoods. Proceeds raised from the Tour help fund our community wide initiatives and opportunities in horticulture, floral design, and the environment. Our Grants Program has distributed funds to more than 50 civic and non-profit organizations throughout the Greater Naples community.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Strengthen member’s interaction and participation in all aspects of the Club. Maintain and strengthen Board leadership by employing "best practices".  Increase the number of talented, community oriented and versatile members. Expand existing educational development programs in the areas of horticulture, floral design and the environment through community outreach and strengthen marketing capabilities to achieve higher visibility and awareness. Find new avenues of support for our grants program so we can continue to strengthen our current partnerships and establish new collaborations with area civic and non-profit organizations. Expand and increase our environmental impact in our community through education and our grants program.

Use round tables (8-10 members/table) at General Membership Meetings to encourage members to sit at randomly drawn numbered tables to interact with members. Experiment with morning meetings, serving refreshments before the meeting, to create a relaxed atmosphere during business meetings and program presentation. Recruit talented NGC members for Program Speakers and demonstrations to encourage members with expertise to participate. Explore ways to increase awareness within the non-profit community of NGC’s Grant Program by requesting Community Foundation of Collier County (CFCC)  to contact appropriate nonprofits and encourage them to apply. Identify best resources to conduct “Board Best Practices” training, New Board Orientation, and an all-day Board Retreat that includes a Board “Best Practices” segment and a “How To Identify and Mentor Your Successor” segment. Maintain ‘Member Skill and Experience Profile’ containing education, experience and current and past community involvement; produce exciting, interesting and educational Programs, Workshops and Field Trips in conjunction with Naples Botanical Garden and the Naples community; survey individual members about goals accomplished during the year to encourage participation and record findings.

Many Naples Garden Club members hold National Garden Club, Inc designations in horticulture, design, and the environment and a number of members are Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Flower Show Judges with vast experience teaching and presenting programs throughout Florida. Since 2004 our office is located at the Naples Botanical Garden which has strengthened our unique relationship with them. We are continually upgrading our website's information on our public programs and our Grants program to nonprofit organizations in the community and announcements through local and state media outlets. Current and past Naples Garden Club Board members have diverse educational and financial expertise including board orientation, board retreat, board training, grant management, contracts, proposals, and software management as well as CPA, MBA, JD and other certificates ad degrees. Our Members’ Experience Profile is on-line and is accessible to members to match our needs with skilled members.

Development of a more in-depth Skills and Experience Profile enabling Naples Garden Club's Board to locate and analyze potential future leaders.  A plan to develop future leaders through our expanded Provisional training program.  Development of an effective strategic marketing plan increasing our visibility through social, on-line and traditional media outlets in a highly competitive non-profit market area.

Balance sheet

Fiscal Year: Jun 01 - May 31

SOURCE: IRS Form 990 info

The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
