Leaving an abusive relationship is very dangerous for victims. In fact a woman is 70x more likely to be murdered within the first year of leaving her abuser than any other time in the relationship. Year after year safe shelter and housing is an unmet need that survivors in Ohio identify. Bethany House works to meet that need by providing safe long-term transitional shelter and advocacy services to survivors and their children who are escaping abuse in their homes.

Transitional Shelter & Advocacy for Survivors of Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is the 3rd leading cause of homelessness among families. The mission of Bethany House is to recognize and respond to the ever-changing needs of domestic violence victims and their children. While there are a few temporary, dorm-style domestic violence shelters in the region, Bethany House is the only long-term apartment-style housing solution available.
In addition to safe, stable housing, Bethany House provides emotional support and financial resources, and gives survivors the time needed to rebuild their lives. On average, a survivor is with us for 14 months, but many stay more than a year due to safety risks and barriers to housing.
We serve all victims of domestic violence, regardless of gender or orientation, and all Bethany House services are provided free of charge.
Bethany House is a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio, and a member of Sylvania Franciscan Ministries and Northwest Ohio Community Shares.

By providing safe long-term shelter and support services, Bethany House gives survivors the time and space to beginning healing - physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially put the pieces back together.

Bethany House provides a one to two year stay in our facility, free of charge, to survivors and their children. Our shelter is an apartment style model giving each family their own bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, and living room. We can serve any victim of domestic violence and our physical space provides the accessibility, privacy, and dignity needed. Our team of advocates provide opportunities and resources that empower survivors in reaching their goals, with an emphasis on safety planning and building a strong support system.

Bethany House has been serving Northwest Ohio for nearly 40 years, providing long-term shelter and advocacy to our community's most vulnerable and at highest risk survivors of domestic violence. We provide these services free of charge including the essential needs of essential items, cleaning products, transportation; recreational opportunities; service coordination, crisis intervention, supportive counseling; and learning opportunities like financial literacy, parenting, healthy relationships, goal setting, etc.

Ultimately our priority is safety for survivors and their children as they flee very dangerous situations. Year after year, survivors report that they felt safer since coming to Bethany House. Additionally survivors say they know more about resources that will help them, felt kindness and respect was shown to them, and had hope for their future since coming to Bethany House. Our services and resources help survivors learn to believe in themselves, accomplish important goals and set a course for a successful future. Bethany House not only offers safe refuge for victims and their children, we provide significant benefits and savings to our community: every $1 invested in Bethany House saves our community more than $65 in social costs for police enforcement, lost work productivity, the legal system response, and mental health services.
