What we aim to solve
YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY - York Public Library is the public library for those who live and work in beautiful York, Maine (comprised of York Village, York Harbor, and Cape Neddick). Public libraries continue to change and evolve, though our core mission remains unchanged: to provide free and equitable access to knowledge and services—regardless of age, sex, education, income, ethnicity, language, or ability. YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY ASSOCIATION - The Town of York provides the financial foundation of our operating budget each year. But the remainder, in addition to all capital expenditures and projects, falls to the York Public Library Association (YPLA), the nonprofit that owns and governs the library and protects its future. This added support from YPLA (dba York Public Library) is what allows the Library to be the best it can be—the library our community needs and deserves.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to enrich lives, inspire minds, and create community for those who live and work in York.
YPL serves York’s year-round population of 13,723 – which can increase to as much as 40,000 in the summer and fall. The library, in a beautiful park-like setting in the heart of York Village, is both a literal and figurative community center, providing access to materials, programs, services and collections dedicated to people of all ages, income levels, ethnicities, and abilities. We offer a wealth of ongoing educational, recreational, and cultural programs – all geared to enrich, entice, and inspire – and all free and open to the public.
The York Public Library Association’s goal is to supplement Town funding – contributing as much as 35% of the Library’s annual budget - to ensure that Library programs, services, and materials remain strong, and capital needs are met.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The York Public Library Association actively recruits financial support from its 500+ yearly Members as well as corporate sponsors. It also hosts annual fundraising events in support of the Library and seeks grant funding for library programs, services, materials, and capital improvements.
Between 5,000- 8,000 people come through our library doors every month, whether they come to check out a book, get help with a new gadget, read the papers, enjoy a quiet workspace with free Wi-Fi, piece together a puzzle, attend a story hour, check their investments, craft with friends, attend a town meeting, research family history, catch a concert, take in an exhibit, get help with a resume, learn to play the ukulele, or meet their neighbors. We’re more than just books!
For many of the Library’s programs, no card is needed; but with a library card, patrons have access to the full gamut of library offerings:

Balance sheetFiscal Year: Jul 01 - Jun 30
The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
