Tap Cancer Out BJJ Open

The Tap Cancer Out BJJ Open empowers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors to fight for more than just points and medals—they fight for those who are in the fight of their lives. These innovative tournaments encourage competitors to raise funds to earn their entry fee. We award and recognize our top adult and children fundraisers as well as our top fundraising team at each tournament. All proceeds benefit our giving partners, which have included the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the St. Baldrick's Foundation, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Global Grappling Day is a day of giving and impact where Grapplers around the world will slap, bump, and roll for one hour straight in honor of those who can't stop fighting after just one hour, one day, or even one year. Participants have the opportunity to fundraise leading up to Global Grappling Day and earn perks, quite literally fighting for all the cancer warriors that are in the fight of their lives.

Global Grappling Day is a virtual fundraising event and the only Tap Cancer Out event we host where literally ANYONE, ANYWHERE in the world can take part. It allows those BJJ practitioners who may not want to step on the tournament mats or may not live close enough to a TCO BJJ Open event an opportunity to get involved and make a difference. All you need is ONE day and ONE hour to change the world!

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We aim to mobilize and empower the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) community to raise awareness and funds for cancer-fighting organization. We do this by hosting the most philanthropic BJJ tournaments in the world.

Unless you run, bike, swim, or play golf, there aren't many opportunities to make a charitable impact by playing a sport or doing an activity. Tap Cancer Out BJJ Open tournaments provide the jiu-jitsu community with and outlet for activism through the sport they're so passionate about. They're sustainable and repeatable, with more and more competitors making the TCO BJJ Open their yearly opportunity to fundraise.

Tap Cancer Out events bring the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community together to not only make an impact in the fight against cancer through the sport that they love, but truly fight for those in the fight of their lives. Beyond our tournaments, we host a yearly Global Grappling Day where BJJ practitioners from around the world can take part to create impact. They may look like other BJJ events on the surface, but they’re unlike any other BJJ events in the world.

The funds that these events raise help fuel the lifesaving research that is getting us closer to tapping cancer out, once and for all. We partner with nonprofit beneficiary organizations who are actively working in the cancer space both domestically and internationally.

While most of our gifts support cancer-research grants, we also want our funds to help in ways not often thought of by those who have never experienced cancer face to face. This can include things like covering costs to allow a family to travel to get treatment or funding the build of a facility that houses families during treatment.

To achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, we can't simply keep doing what we're doing. Though there are many people across the globe taking action, there aren't enough.

Tap Cancer Out takes the unique approach of mobilizing and untapped community to support and the organizations that are developing innovative cancer treatments, getting families to the care they need, and increasing survival rates. Before we existed, there was no philanthropic presence in the BJJ community. And when you look at the larger universe of sports, hobbies, and activities, there aren't many organizations that are providing communities of passionate participants with a platform for activism. Too often we have to do things (like running or growing a mustache) that we AREN'T passionate about, just to make a difference.

To reach the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal of Good Health and Well Being, we need to activate untapped communities that are perfectly positioned to create impact, and Tap Cancer Out does just that in the BJJ community. Since 2012 we've hosted 72 events, attracting 22,313 participants where 10,201 fundraised helping us raise and donated $3.5 million to our beneficiary organizations.

We are a small but might team having already hosted 72 events with a 2022 schedule of 20 tournaments across the United States. We have not only continuously improved our process to host events, but we've continually improved how we empower our fundraisers.

Each fundraiser is provided dozens of emails with tips and tricks to optimize fundraising. Our team stands at the ready to answer questions and even hop on Zoom calls to help them develop a fundraising plan of attack. The average Tap Cancer Out fundraiser will raise more than $500.

Our 2022 events aim to generate more than $2.4 million in revenue which will allow us to pass through $1.4 million to our beneficiaries.

Since 2012 we have raised and donated $3.5 million to our 27 beneficiary partners, helping fund 58 grants and special projects. In 2021 alone we donated $1.2 million to 20 beneficiary partners and in 2022 our goal is to donate $1.4 million to 10 beneficiary partners (including 5 new partners) by hosting 20 Tap Cancer Out BJJ Open tournaments across the country as well as our virtual Global Grappling Day event.

Balance sheet

Fiscal Year: Jan 01 - Dec 31

SOURCE: IRS Form 990 info

The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
