Mission

The first orchestra in the nation to focus solely on Latin American music, the Pan American Symphony (PASO) continues to be an artistic and cultural leader in the Washington, DC region by engaging talented Latin American musicians, soloists, and composers in unique performances that educate the public about the diverse cultures of Latin America. PASO aspires to create opportunities to introduce Latin American music and Latino music talent to the region. We carry out this vision in a range of ways: commissioning orchestral works by Latin American composers, showcasing rising Latino music, dance, and vocal talent, and expanding our collaborations with other arts organizations.

PASO aims to educate the public about the rich diverse music culture of Latin America and to promote Latino music talent. PASO premiers new symphony compositions by Latino composers and showcases Latino music culture with the objective of making symphony concerts more inclusive and more accessible to the public.

DC Tango Festival

An annual festival celebrating the music of Argentine tango with a variety of events spanning a month, such as free tango-themed films, dance lessons, visiting tango music ensembles, a milonga dance party with PASO's tango ensemble, and more. Most events take place at the Embassy of Argentina in April or May.

The Pan American Symphony Orchestra carries out approximately 5 concerts a season with each concert featuring Latin American or Spanish compositions. Concerts take place at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Lisner Auditorium, and other venues throughout Washington, DC.

Artistic Director

Mr. Sergio Alessandro Buslje

A native of Rosario, Argentina, Maestro Bušlje studied music from an early age and won the prestigious Alberto Williams Award for Young Musicians when he was only 10 years old. He continued his studies in conducting, piano, violoncello, and tuba at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Facultad de de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires. Before founding the Pan American Symphony Orchestra (PASO) in 1991, Maestro Bušlje was Assistant Conductor of the American University Orchestra and conductor of the American University Camerata in Washington, DC. In 2011, Maestro Bušlje played a command performance for Peruvian President Alan Garcia in the Presidential Palace. He led PASO in a special concert for the 2013 Latino Presidential Inaugural Celebration hosted by Eva Longoria at the Kennedy Center. Among other soloists, Maestro Buslje has conducted Juan Diego Flores, Raul Esparza, Placido Domingo, Ruggiero Ricci, and Daniel Binelli. He is a well-recognized expert on Argentine tango .
