Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Combating Gender Bias in the Judiciary

In the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) it is imperative to increase transparency, consistency, and accountability within the justice system.

When women and children in PICs access the formal justice system in GBV cases, perpetrators can receive disproportionately low sentences or no custodial sentence at all for domestic violence and sexual offenses. The evidence shows the driving force behind this problem is gender discrimination, which includes: stereotypes, rape myths, and customary reconciliation

Population(s) Served
Women and girls
Children and youth

We are providing local activists and lawyers with ground-level data necessary to improve access to basic needs and improve health outcomes for marginalized women.

Population(s) Served
Families
Victims and oppressed people

When viewed together, these complementary mechanisms present a unique opportunity to monitor the implementation of human rights and development goals while uncovering important gaps within each respective system. Fusing data from both mechanisms will provide greater transparency in understanding the linkage between human rights and international development while creating a framework to monitor the progress of the 17 SDGs for all 193 U.N. member countries.

Adults

Advocating for standards based on human rights norms to ensure equality as all public and private spaces are increasingly affected by artificial intelligence.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

ICAAD and our partners isolate the root causes that perpetuate systemic discrimination, which also fuels violence against vulnerable communities. This has allowed us to work on a diverse array of initiative from gender based violence to hate crimes to maternal health. Each of these initiatives has the same goal, which is to bring together multidisciplinary partnerships to use evidence-based solutions to uncover and challenge systemic discrimination.

Even in developed nations, discrimination can greatly influence the access to resources available to vulnerable communities. Access to justice is inextricably linked to achieving peace. Data can be a powerful tool for championing human rights and revising systems that allow discrimination to perpetuate unchecked.

Multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral partnerships are at the core of each initiative. ICAAD drives $10 of Pro Bono resources for the communities we serve for every $1 of donor or Foundation support.

Successfully litigated 5 discrimination and asylum cases. \nHelped secure legislative change in the Solomon Islands that increased penalties for sexual offenses. \nPublished first of its kind report on gender bias in the judiciary for the Pacific region.\nSuccessfully completed a pilot program looking at gaps in the health system in Assam, India that led to the highest rates of maternal and child deaths. \nTrained law students at the University of Fordham and Univ. College London. \nTrained over 300 senior legal officers and civil society advocates\nIntegrated our methodology of looking at gender-based violence case law within local CSOs.\nPublished a Handbook that shares our methodology of analyzing case law.

Balance sheet

Fiscal Year: Jan 01 - Dec 31

SOURCE: IRS Form 990 info

The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
