A Not So Concise History of the House Cat

Our museum offers an extensive walk through time from ancient Egypt to the present, educating our feline-adoring guests on our human relationship with cats and the many facets of their history. Our collection includes an Egyptian mummified kitten, art work by Louis Wain, and many other varieties of expression around the history of the domesticated cat.

Founder and President

Dr Harold Walter Sims Jr

Dr. Harold W. Sims is a retired professor of education. After teaching biology for twenty-two years, he and his wife retired to the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina where they discovered a love of cats. This led Harold to open a no-kill-no-cage cats-only shelter, Catman2, a non-profit which has now existed for over twenty-five years. After the success of Catman2 Inc., Harold turned his attention toward another passion: art and antiques. These interests, married with his incurable love of the feline, inspired him to develop a separate non-profit, the American Museum of the House Cat that features his collection of over 5000 cat-related items from around the globe and spanning the ancient world to the present. The AMHC has operated since 2017. Closed during the pandemic, it reopened in a new location in 2023. Harold is an avid writer, having penned over six books of both prose and poetry for all ages that are inspired by the shelter and the museum.
