Mission

The Mission of the Foundation is to improve the quality of life in the Coastal Bend by building community endowment and addressing social, educational, environmental and cultural needs through the awarding of grants and scholarships.

Notes from the nonprofit

Since CBCF was established in 1981, CBCF’s assets have grown to over $97.6 million in 312 funds. CBCF has assisted its donors in awarding over $138 million in grants to nonprofits and scholarships to individuals to help Coastal Bend residents improve their lives and the lives of people around them. Our most prominent event is the Coastal Bend Day of Giving. Established in 2009 to address the human needs caused by the 2008 recession, the Coastal Bend has embraced this event to lift up nonprofits assisting the neediest of our neighbors. The Day of Giving has achieved remarkable growth; funds raised have increased from $410,000 at inception to almost $3.34 million in 2020. Since 2009 the event has put $20 million to work in our community aiding those who are least able to help themselves, and with no administrative fees taken from the matching funds or the individual donations by CBCF.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Coastal Bend Grants

Helps meet the charitable needs of and enhances the quality of life in the Coastal Bend of Texas through grants to charitable organizations. Grants are awarded annually through a competitive process and focus on the areas of: arts and culture, education, environment, families and children, health, human services and public good. Funding is available in CBCF's seven county service area of Aransas, Bee, Jim Wells, Kleberg, Nueces, Refugio and San Patricio.

Scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors and current college students for both CBCF and Outside scholarships. A single online application considers students for over 70 CBCF scholarships. Outside scholarships use an application process specific to the organization or donor. Students must live in the CBCF seven county service area of Aransas, Bee, Jim Wells, Kleberg, Nueces, Refugio and San Patricio.

In November 2009, nine Coastal Bend area foundations initiated the Coastal Bend Day of Giving, a matching gift program in response to the need for food, shelter, and basic human services in the Coastal Bend. The funds raised assisted nonprofits impacted by the downturn in the economy. Additional Days of Giving have been held every year since, raising over $24.3 million to help thousands of our neediest neighbors with much needed services. Administered by Coastal Bend Community Foundation, the 24-hour online matching fundraising campaign is held the second Tuesday in November. Matching funders pledge match monies, offering donors the unique opportunity to make gifts that are doubled to local participating nonprofits in a seven-county service area. Only the donations made through the website at coastalbenddayofgiving.org count towards the match. As Coastal Bend Community Foundation underwrites all operating costs of the event, 100% of the matching funds go directly to the nonprofits.
