What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Black communities across the United States are plagued by social ills caused by centuries of inequitable access to opportunities. There are numerous federal and other public policies that maintain poverty and segregation. Therefore, the possibilities of how to address these issues cannot be limited to any one area - education, health, economics, etc. More often than should be, communities are so plagued with the symptoms of systemic racism that even when members of the community achieve success, those assets are often quieted or removed from the community.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Oakland Community Montessori School at FBE Schools

FBE Schools believes that the traditional method of education used in most schools is based on a system of oppression designed to maintain the status quo. To meet the needs of today’s children and society’s future needs, we must provide children with an education that fosters independence, develops problem-solvers, and promotes the importance of each individual’s contribution to the universe in which we live and work. We work with our communities to provide anti-biased and anti-racist Montessori schools that develop children who are lifelong learners, seekers of the truth, and fearless advocates for justice.

Our first school - Oakland Community Montessori School is an in-home family child care center located in Oakland.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our overall goal is to improve the Black community's relationship with education in order to foster generational health, wealth, and knowledge.

5 year goals:
* Provide anti-biased anti-racist Montessori education to at least 50 children.
* Establish partnerships with at least 2 community organizations that support learning through familial support (ie. food security, housing security, job security, etc.).
* Serve at least 10 families in wrap-around services (ie. food security, housing security, job security, etc.).

* Raise community-based, anti-biased, anti-racist (ABAR) Montessori schools in predominantly Black neighborhoods.
* Develop marketing strategies that help to connect families in need to provided services.
* Identify and market neutral locations for strategic partnerships to provide support services for children and families in need.

Awareness-building programming, such as Voices of Tomorrow Youth-Led Conference, has increased community engagement by 200%.

We have opened our first ABAR Montessori preschool in Oakland, CA.
