What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The Torrance Art Museum Advocates aims to support the financial needs of the Torrance Art Museum Curator and staff. With our financial support they are able to fund established and emerging, mid-career and established artist stipends, artist-in-residency programs locally and abroad, site-specific installations, shipping costs for artists' work, and ultimately infrastructure (portable walls).

TAMA TALKS

TAMA TALKS are virtual format discussions where the topic is....art! Learning from artists, curators, and educators about art and the world of art! TAMA TALKS are sessions created to gain new perspectives on artists and their work. The goal of these talks is to broaden the understanding of artists and to expose viewers to artists with whom they may not be familiar. Many of the artists who show their work at the Torrance Art Museum have chosen to participate in a recorded session which is posted to our social media and website.

Population(s) Served

Both established and emerging artists spend considerable time, talent and finances on the works produced to show at the museum. Curators spend time vetting and selection artists to show their work. We feel both should be valued and we provide artists stipends to encourage and show our support to these professionals. Similarly, Artists in Residence incur costs related to their residencies which TAMA helps to defray.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The Torrance Art Museum Advocates (TAMA) is a non-profit, community-based volunteer organization whose goal is furthering the availability, understanding and appreciation of art through its specific support of the Torrance Art Museum.

We host a series of TAMA TALKS uploaded and shared via YouTube to accomplish this goal. Our financial contributions via sales of donated artwork, memberships and donations meet the goal of increasing the availability and appreciation of art exhibited at the Torrance Art Museum.

Advancing the opportunities for both established and emerging artists through stipends is a concept in which we firmly believe and our goal is to continue to support these artists as they show their work at the Torrance Art Museum.

Through our exclusive support of the Torrance Art Museum and their robust programming, we plan to provide QUALITY EDUCATION opportunities to the local, state, national and international communities who attend events we fund. We also want to expand the opportunities afforded to emerging, mid-career and established artists who participate in the programming aimed at providing QUALITY EDUCATION in the area of modern and contemporary art.

Our capability to meet this goal is directly proportional to the successes of our revenue-producing programming and successful grant awards.

In 2023 we've been able to fund two Artist in Residency programs (Cycladic Arts and WILD), as well as providing artist and curator stipends for several art exhibitions (Body Politic, Art & Med, Sur Biennial). We've also been able to fund the shipping of artwork shown at the museum (UnCivil War: An Election Special).
