We expect a lot from our health professionals. They are constantly under pressure to perform and when making decisions that will affect the health and well-being of their patients, there is no room for error. However, they are human, too. They can succumb to burnout/stress, addictions, emotional or mental illness, and behavioral issues, like everyone else. The difference is their problems can directly impact the safety of the patients they care for. Fortunately the Tennessee Medical Foundation's Physician's Health Program (PHP) addresses health concerns that are specific to health professionals while working to protect the safety of patients in Tennessee.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Physician's Health Program
The PHP protects patients through identification, intervention, rehabilitation, and the provision of advocacy/support for physicians and other health professionals impaired by addictive disease and/or mental/emotional illness.
Tennessee Professional Screening Questionnaire
Increasing mental health referrals to the Tennessee Medical Foundation Physician's Health Program led the Foundation to develop a new mental health resource for use by licensed health professionals across Tennessee. The Tennessee Professional Screening Questionnaire, or TN PSQ, is an online self-screening tool that was launched statewide on February 3, 2020. Strictly a NON-crisis service, the TNPSQ offers an anonymous, confidential online mental health screening that will result in referrals to appropriate mental health resources and optional interaction with a program counselor. It utilizes the Interactive Screening Program (ISP), an online screening platform created by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Working in partnership with the AFSP, the TMF customized the ISP tool for the licensed health professionals it serves in Tennessee, which include physicians, (MDs and DOs), physician assistants, chiropractors, podiatrists, x-ray technologists, and veterinarians.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The mission of the Physician's Health Program (PHP) is to protect patients through identification, intervention, rehabilitation, and the provision of advocacy/support for physicians impaired by addictive disease, mental or emotional illness. As part of that mission, the TMF also works to educate the healthcare and health professional community about impairment and wellness, as well as provide a variety of resources on both topics for the health professions it serves.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategies are to:
1) Work with healthcare entities, health professional organizations, healthcare leaders, and medical school/training programs to identify individuals in need of assistance via via a 24-hour confidential phone and electronic response system.
2) Raise awareness about TMF services and resources via in-person and electronic presentations to medical residents and students across Tennessee, to practicing physicians at State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Company seminars, to medical staffs of hospitals, medical groups, faculty of medical schools, and to healthcare associations and organizations throughout Tennessee.
3) Develop resources that aid health professionals served by the TMF in connecting with the help they need, either on their own or through the TMF Physician's Health Program.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our medical director and clinical staff are uniquely qualified to assist healthcare professionals in crisis while protecting the safety of the patients in their care. Our medical director is an expert in public health, mental health and addiction, and works closely with Tennessee health leaders to ensure TMF services are a known resource, and that various health professional audiences receive regular education about impairment and healthy practice. The TMF works hard to maintain a close relationship with the state's healthcare licensing boards, with the state's largest malpractice insurer, with state health professional and specialty associations, medical schools and health professional training institutions. Our organization's 43-year history and stature in Tennessee help ensure our capability to raise awareness and encourage partnership on the topics of health professional impairment and wellness.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Our program continues to see steady growth in requests for our educational programming, a continued increase in referrals of at-risk, struggling, and impaired individuals annually, and a sizeable increase in access to our new online mental health resource, the Tennessee Professional Screening Questionnaire, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. We continue to work in partnership with Tennessee's healthcare licensing entities to ensure the health and wellbeing of the health professionals we are contracted to serve.

Balance sheetFiscal Year: Jan 01 - Dec 31
SOURCE: IRS Form 990
The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
