Mission

The Bannerman Castle Trust (BCT) led by Founder and Executive Director Neil J. Caplan has made remarkable strides in the field of historic preservation, demonstrating exemplary achievements since its incorporation in 1994 as a nonprofit Friends organization working with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The BCT is dedicated to pooling resources and funding to stabilize the buildings on Pollepel Island and to educate the public about the island's value and history.

Notes from the nonprofit

Time, the elements, and maybe even the goblins of the island will take their toll on some of the turrets and towers, and perhaps eventually the castle itself, but the little island will always have its place in history and in legend and will forever be a jewel in its Hudson Highland setting. - Charles S. Bannerman (Grandson to Francis Bannerman VI) The Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc. is hopefully its future. - Jane Campbell Bannerman (Founding Member of the BCT)

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc. is a not-for-profit Friends organization of volunteers working with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The Trust is dedicated to bringing together resources and funding to stabilize the buildings on Pollepel Island.

The Trust aims to raise awareness and educate the public and government organizations on the value and history of the island. The Trust aims to raise funds for repairing the island, creating a master plan and eventually stabilizing the structures. The Trust is working to make the island safe and accessible for the public to enjoy the island as an educational, cultural, historical and recreational facility promoting heritage tourism in the Hudson Valley.

We need to continue to raise funds to stabilize and prevent further damage to the beautiful castle ruins. Attending a performance or event at Bannerman Castle is a fun way to support the preservation efforts of Bannerman Island!

We have recently received a grant to hire a Development Director. Together with the Board of Directors, Advisory Board and new Development Director we are developing the strategic plan.

The organization has a committed board and leadership. The goals are set and will be obtained by step by step planning and implementation.

Balance sheet

Fiscal Year: Jan 01 - Dec 31

SOURCE: IRS Form 990 info

The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.

Executive Director

Neil Caplan

Neil's vision and passion for Pollepel Island, and its structures and stories, have fueled him towards the astonishing success that people from all over the world experience today. Before Caplan's involvement, the island had been allowed to deteriorate nearly to the point of no return. But since its opening to the public in 2004, the Neil and the Bannerman Castle Trust has made it possible for thousands of visitors from around the globe to experience the majestic Hudson River and the history behind the mysterious castle that many had only glimpsed from a commuter rail (or, for the truly astute, through the rail (or, for the truly astute, through the windows of the train traveling up the Hudson when Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint fled New York City in the Hitchcock classic, North by Northwest!). Celebrating 30 Years of Preservation, History, Culture and Recreation.
