Cielo Sunsarae founded The Queer Trans Project in Jacksonville, Florida in Spring 2021 as a response to limitations imposed by local queer organizations on LGBTQ+ individuals seeking essential resources. With a vision, a $500 grant, and a 2 bedroom apartment, we established ourselves as an inclusive organization dedicated to addressing dysphoria experienced by trans and gender non-conforming individuals, irrespective of their demographic background.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Build-a-Queer Kits
Build-a-Queer Kits are customizable, gender-affirming care packages provided by The Queer Trans Project. These kits are uniquely designed to support transgender and non-binary individuals by offering essential items that align with their gender identity. Each kit can include a variety of items such as chest binders, packers, breast forms, makeup, and health products, all tailored to the recipient's needs. The kits are free of charge and available nationwide, with a special focus on BIPOC individuals through early access programs. What sets Build-a-Queer Kits apart is their accessibility; they can be easily ordered through our website shop, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to receive the support they need. Build-a-Queer Kits aim to empower and uplift trans and non-binary communities by providing crucial resources for gender affirmation. To date, they've given out over $350,000 worth of gender-affirming items.
Flight Assistance for Gender Affirming Care
The Queer Trans Project's Flight Assistance Program offers free private and commercial flights to transgender and non-binary individuals seeking gender-affirming care. Through a partnership with Elevated Access, this program ensures that transportation costs are not a barrier to accessing essential medical services. To date, the program has flown individuals over 125,000 miles, making a significant impact in helping people reach the care they need. Whether it's for surgery, hormone therapy, or other gender-affirming procedures, the program provides vital support to those on their transition journey.
The QTP Loveline
The QTP Loveline is a pre-recorded, 24/7 affirmation service offering words of encouragement and support collected from community members, allies, and celebrities worldwide. Unlike a live hotline, these messages are available on demand, providing continuous support, including a guided meditation. The initiative is designed to uplift the LGBTQ+ community, especially during challenging times, and is inclusive with transcripts available for those with hearing impairments. Call (855) 578-5683 to listen to these affirmations and feel the love and encouragement from around the world.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We center on urgently delivering essential supplies and assistance to help combat dysphoria and promote dignified, safe, private, and empowered living.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Queer Trans Project (QTP) advances gender equity and well-being by providing free, customizable Build-a-Queer kits and offering transportation support through its Flight Assistance Program. They empower communities through educational events and advocate for BIPOC trans individuals by partnering with local clinics and providing gender-inclusive medical resources. Sales from their Gender Grip tape sustain these initiatives, ensuring continued support and reducing inequalities. QTP’s holistic approach addresses both immediate needs and systemic barriers, contributing to long-term gender equity and health equity.
The Queer Trans Project is guided by four key pillars: Authentic Representation, ensuring our Black trans-led leadership truly reflects and amplifies the voices of the communities we serve; Community-Rooted values, where the strength of our organization lies in the dedication of volunteers, donors, and meaningful partnerships; Inclusivity & Accessibility, offering support to all LGBTQ+ individuals regardless of identity through programs like BIPOC Early Access and accessible resources; and Honesty & Integrity, fostering a culture of trust and respect by providing gender-affirming resources without burdensome verification, ensuring everyone receives the support they need while upholding the integrity of our community.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The Queer Trans Project (QTP) is uniquely capable of delivering our three core programs—Build-a-Queer Kits, Flight Assistance Program, and QTP Loveline—because of our deep-rooted connection to the communities we serve and our commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. As a Black trans-led organization, we bring lived experience and empathy to our work, ensuring that our initiatives are designed with a true understanding of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals.
We are equipped to meet our goals through three core programs: Build-a-Queer Kits, Flight Assistance Program, and QTP Loveline. Our Build-a-Queer Kits provide free, customizable gender-affirming items to individuals nationwide, ensuring immediate support for those exploring their gender identity. The Flight Assistance Program offers essential transportation for those seeking gender-affirming care, having already flown individuals over 125,000 miles across the U.S. The QTP Loveline delivers affirmations and support through real community voices, offering emotional connection and encouragement. Together, these programs, backed by strong partnerships and sustainable funding from our Gender Grip sales, enable us to address the diverse needs of the LGBTQ+ community effectively.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
So far, The Queer Trans Project (QTP) has distributed over $350,000 worth of gender-affirming items through our Build-a-Queer kits and flown individuals over 125,000 miles across the U.S. to access essential care through our Flight Assistance Program. We’ve successfully established strong partnerships with clinics and community organizations, ensuring that BIPOC and trans individuals receive the support they need. Our Gender Grip product has also generated nearly $20,000 in revenue, which helps sustain our programs.
Next, we aim to expand our impact by increasing our program output by 25% in 2025, further developing our community education initiatives, and continuing to advocate for gender equity and inclusivity on a larger scale. Our dream goal is to establish a dedicated office space where we can operate year-round, fulfilling Build-a-Queer kit requests with the efficiency and scale of an Amazon-type operation. This would allow us to provide continuous support to the LGBTQ+ community and ensure that gender-affirming resources are always accessible to those in need.

- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
