Mission

Were committed to improving the lives of all stray, abandoned, and abused animals who come to the Front Street Animal Shelter. We support programs needed to find loving homes and care for animals in need. We endeavor to support all pets in the region and the people who love them.

Notes from the nonprofit

Friends of Front Street Shelter is the nonprofit fundraising partner of the City of Sacramento's Front Street Animal Shelter. We are a small team consisting of 9 board members and 2 employees, but our programs impact over 2,000 animals in the Sacramento area each year, both inside the Front Street Shelter and out in the community. Your support provides for specialty care of shelter animals, grants to help place needy pets with local and national rescue groups, keep sick and injured pets with their owners, and spay & neuter community cats.

Sometimes the neediest pets in the shelter are the hardest to place in homes. This is particularly true of animals with medical conditions that cant be fixed, and will need medication and treatment for the rest of their lives.

We believe that money shouldnt keep a loving family from providing a home to a pet in need of hospice care. When the vet team at Front Street determines that an adoptable animal will need this care, Friends of Front Street covers the cost of treatment for the life of the pet, so their adoptive families can spend their time and money giving them the best life possible in the time they have left.

Part of our mission at Friends of Front Street is to support programs needed to find loving homes and care for animals in need. One of the many ways we fulfill this mission is through our Friends of Friends program, which provides financial support for organizations in our community who provide important services for animals. The vast majority of our grants are attached to individual animals at the Front Street Animal Shelter, who are in need of medical or behavioral rehabilitation. This grant funding supports their care with amazing transfer partners of the Front Street Animal Shelter until they are able to be placed in loving homes! We have worked with rescue organizations locally, regionally, and even nationally to place Front Street pets.

All organizations who receive funding from Friends of Front Street are registered 501(c)3 charities whose primary purpose is supporting the welfare of animals.

Balance sheet

Fiscal Year: Jan 01 - Dec 31

SOURCE: IRS Form 990 info

The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.

President

Mr. Jim Houpt

Jim Houpt is an avid volunteer at the Front Street Animal Shelter and president of Friends of Front Street Shelter. Jim is mostly retired attorney and very active in the Sacramento community.

Executive Director

Emily Blade

Emily comes to Friends of Front Street after ten years working in the field of animal welfare. She began her career at Animal Care Sanctuary, a nonprofit shelter near her hometown in Pennsylvania, where she held multiple positions within the organization before joining the ASU/VT Maddie's Fund Nationwide Fostering Study in 2019. She has consulted with animal shelter staff nationwide on program development and implementation, with a focus on identifying barriers to success, trialing solutions, and streamlining processes. Emily has co-authored several scientific publications on fostering practices in animal shelters. Her work launching crisis fostering programs at shelters across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic deepened her interest in supporting pet owners experiencing crisis, a passion that closely aligns with the Friends of Front Street mission. A Front Street volunteer and foster since 2020, she is excited to serve the community and its pets in this role.
