Mission

High Tails Animal Rescue, NFP is a licensed 501(c)(3) not-for-profit animal rescue and welfare organization. We are both volunteer-run and foster-based serving the Greater Chicagoland area and Northern Suburbs of Illinois. Our organization rescues cats of all breeds and ages and finds them permanent homes while helping the occasional dog. We rescue primarily from animal controls and shelters, and assist our established partners with owner abandonment cases and friendly strays. Not only do we save lives, but we are also actively committed to advancing animal welfare by being an educational resource for families, promoting responsible pet ownership. To achieve our mission, we network amongst fosters, volunteers, rescuers, transports, and pet professionals.

Notes from the nonprofit

We are 100% volunteer-based, including our board of directors, and as a nonprofit, we rely on the public's generosity through donations, sponsorships, fundraisers, and grants. This means every contribution to our organization goes directly towards the veterinary care of our animals, food and supplies, operational costs, and our mission.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

We aim to assist in solving the homeless pet crisis that continues to increase every year. Approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide. Of those, approximately 3.1 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. Each year, approximately 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized (ASPCA, 2022). Many factors contribute to companion animal overpopulation, most commonly being the lack of affordable sterilization and veterinarian care, behavioral challenges, and a general lack of education surrounding responsible pet ownership. High Tails is working directly towards reducing the homeless animal population by rescuing dogs and cats, placing them into our foster program, and finding suitable adopters. We also strive to decrease the number of owner surrenders to shelters and animal controls, where pets may otherwise be euthanized, through animal welfare initiatives such as public education and pet owner assistance.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Adoption Services

We offer adoption services to eligible families interested in providing a cat or dog within our foster-base a permanent home. All prospective adopters are thoroughly screened upon the submission of their application including an interview, home check, and reference calls. Our team works closely with potential adopters to understand their preferences and lifestyle to match them with the best-suited pet. When an adopter is approved, they are introduced to the pet of their interest during a scheduled meet and greet. To officially adopt, the adopter must sign and adhere to the adoption agreement and pay our adoption fee. All adopters are provided with guidance post-adoption to ensure adoptions are a success.

Our adoption fees are fixed amounts based on age and they cover vaccines, spay/neuter, microchip, FIV/FeLV test, heartworm test, dewormer, flea and tick prevention, and a wellness exam.

All prospective foster families are thoroughly screened upon the submission of their foster application including an interview, home check, and reference calls. When a foster is approved, they are to complete online educational courses to obtain certifications as well as sign and adhere to the foster volunteer agreement. Our team works individually with every foster family to understand their preferences and lifestyles in order to carefully match the foster family with a pet, ensuring a harmonious and enjoyable experience. Once a family joins our foster program they are provided with direct round-the-clock support, foster care handbooks, professional training, behavioral support, certifications, and a partner animal hospital local to their area. We cover the costs of the animal's supplies and medical care.

Advancing animal welfare is a big part of our mission as we believe change is rooted in education. We aim to increase access to reliable resources, education, and guidance for pet owners through adoption packets, foster handbooks, online certification courses, and our website. We work to inspire and empower a community of responsible pet owners through owner assistance, outreach programs, and providing available resources. By doing so, we can prevent owner surrenders, euthanasia, and the mistreatment of animals by their owners.

Additionally, we assist pet owners with responsible rehoming in the event we do not intake their pet(s) into our foster program, and we are unable to network alternative placement elsewhere. By sharing and assisting with credible rehoming third-party platforms, we educate pet owners on how to advertise and rehome their pets in a safe manner such as vetting potential adopters, spaying or neutering pets prior to rehoming, and how to write informative pet bios.

Population(s) Served

We offer rescue services to homeless cats and dogs of all breeds, ages, backgrounds, and medical histories. We do intake dogs and cats from neighboring states where transportation is provided, however, the animals local to where we are based have priority placement within our foster program. All the animals we intake are thoroughly evaluated for temperament/personality, sociability, behavioral concerns, and health status. Owner surrenders and TNR cats are handled on a case-by-case basis. Within our foster program, our animals receive medical attention from our veterinarian partners and personalized care from certified foster families until adoption.

We provide our animals with the following standard medical care: Wellness exam, age-appropriate and state-required vaccines, spay/neuter, microchip and registration, FIV/FeLV test (cats), heartworm test (dogs), dewormer, and flea and tick prevention. If our animals require additional medical assistance, we do not hesitate to provide it.

We stress the importance of making long-lasting partnerships by connecting with fellow 501(c)(3) organizations, shelters, rescuers, volunteers, businesses, and more. We do not view the animal rescue field as a competition, but as a place to uplift and support one another towards a common goal; saving the lives of homeless pets in need.

We also extend our networking services to animals in need of placement that we are unable to intake into our foster program. We assist other organizations, owners, and rescuers with finding safe placements for animals as we believe no animal should be left behind.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We aim to save, care for, and adopt out as many dogs and cats as possible without surpassing our means through our adoption services and our foster and volunteer programs. By working with a broad network consisting of volunteers, rescuers, organizations, and businesses, High Tails is able to save pets deserving of a second chance every year. High Tails provides the care needed to meet the individual needs of all our animals and safe temporary housing until our animals can be placed into their permanent homes. We also aim to serve as a resource to our local communities by providing information on proper pet ownership and owner assistance.

Through our efforts, we emphasize the importance of necessary medical care such as spay or neuter surgery, training, hardship assistance, general welfare, and more. We believe animals should not be euthanized due to lack of a home, and we are actively working towards the day when that is true for all companion animals.

We foster and rehome dogs and cats who are essentially homeless. All animals in our care are tested for common diseases, assessed behaviorally, provided with necessary medical care, vaccinated, and altered before they are adopted into permanent homes. Our team consists of pet experts who are knowledgeable about common dog and cat behavior issues and are available to advise foster, volunteers, and adopters regarding safe handling techniques and pet care.

Good customer service is a cornerstone of our philosophy. We want every person who encounters the organization to feel like they have been welcomed and accepted into our family. We also aim to adopt all dogs and cats under our care into permanent homes in order to enable us to take in and save more lives in need of our help. We are committed to making the adoption process as seamless as possible, and ensuring all our animals find permanent homes, no matter how long or how much effort it takes.

We intake dogs and cats from local shelters and animal controls to minimize euthanasia rates, rehabilitate as necessary, and adopt to the best-matched family. We will educate and promote responsible pet ownership including the importance of spay and neutering, annual vaccinations, and the significance of training, if needed, to prevent surrendering of pets.

We are capable of meeting our goals through a multitude of efforts to support the organization and its mission, and by creating a dependable network to save lives and assist pet owners. Through organizational fundraising and external donations, grants, and sponsorships, we are able to continue our mission and grow the organization to save lives and expand positive impacts. Through strategic marketing, advertising, and recruitment, we are able to grow our online presence and connect with individuals to increase our foster and volunteer programs and adopt out our dogs and cats as quickly and efficiently as possible to make room to save more lives in need.

Additionally, to ensure we are providing adequate assistance to pet owners, our team continues to expand their education on safe and proper handling techniques and stress-free pet care. In an ever-changing world, we strive to stay updated on new fact-based information to ensure all our animals receive the best care possible and to set our volunteers, animals, and families up for success. Through partnerships with local animal hospitals, businesses, and organizations, we are also able to provide up-to-date information and outreach initiatives.

We had a successful start-up in August 2022 and have diligently continued our efforts to grow our programs and services to save as many lives as possible. We are going to continue growing our foster and volunteer programs and expand our networks and partnerships, all for the good of animals in need of our help. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that does not receive any government funding, we rely on the generosity of others consisting of donations, sponsorships, and grants to help us continue our mission.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
