Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Every day, across our community, aspiring readers struggle to read and comprehend written material. Reading is a fundamental skill that helps people comprehend the world we live in and master subjects in all personal, academic, and career or vocational pursuits. The ability to read allows us to open new worlds and explore new possibilities. Howeverm the readers whom we serve never get the opportunity to explore these possibilities and lack the confidence that the ability read given to an individual.

We support educators and volunteers who tutor our students who struggle with reading. For students who have difficulty with reading at the word level, we use an Orton-Gillingham-based program to tutor students one-on-one online during one-hour sessions at least twice per week. For students who have difficulty understanding what they are reading and who have difficulty responding to comprehension questions, we use the Strategic Instruction Model Learning Strategies and Content Enhancement Routines developed at the University of Kansas to tutor small groups of four students during one-hour sessions multiple times per week.

We partner with nonprofit organizations and with individual parents to provide these services on a sliding fee basis depending on financial need.

Our team includes expert educators who agree to follow our sliding fee structure in support of our vision of removing barriers, including economic constraints for our students. Although they could charge far more for their tutoring, they are dedicated to making the most expensive tutoring available to those who could not ordinarily afford these services.

We also provide tutoring to students whose parents can pay the usual and customary fees for this highly specialized instruction, which adds funds to our scholarship program.

Two of our team members are Instructional Coaches and Trainers for the Orton-Gillingham-based online program we use when tutoring one-on-one. A third team member is the national trainer for the publisher of the program we use.
She simply volunteers as a tutor, whom others may observe. Two of our team members are Professional Developers for the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning Strategic Instruction Model Learning Strategies and Content Enhancement Routines (KU-CRL: SIM LS & CER). Five of our team members possess specialized educational credentials that directly follow the Science of Reading and the Structured Literacy Approach, which includes the Orton-Gillingham Approach.

Our Treasurer is a CPA with extensive expertise in audits, financial analysis, tax law. Two of our volunteers are accountants; one is a CPA who works with many nonprofit organizations and helps them develop sustainability plans. Our Board Developer Consultant is scheduled to begin a series of Board Retreats that will focus on sustainability, revising our Strategic Plan, and Board Development.

Our Board of Advisors are active partners, some of whom attend our Board Meetings, Board Retreat, or committee meetings. All of our Advisors consult frequently and as needed with the Executive Director and Board members. Our parents support our mission according to their abilities. One parent hosts our October is Dyslexia Awareness Month Give-Back fundraiser at the waterfront seafood restaurant that he manages. One parent serves as a parent liaison based on her LCSW background. Three parents have assist in our efforts to tap into the State of Florida tutoring scholarship funds. One new member of our Board of Directors is assisting with marketing and community outreach based on her expertise in those areas.
