Mission

The Davies Manor Association preserves and interprets the Davies Manor log-house museum and historic grounds. We aim to provide an inclusive, multi-faceted space for the educational study of the Davies family, regional history, early Shelby county farm life, and the natural environment; by doing so we create opportunities for the public to make meaningful connections between the past and present.

Front Porch Crafting

Front Porch Crafting is a series that brings hand crafts to everyone. The main purpose is to give anyone the chance to try out a craft to see if they enjoy it before they buy all the materials. Focused primarily on textile arts, this series helps beginners met with artisans to learn and experience different arts in a hands on setting. There is currently a suggested donation but we hope to offer it completely free in the future.

The main focus at Davies is always our historic tours. Open for daily tours of the historic house April- December Tuesday-Saturday 12-4, we continually do research to give guests the most accurate and well documented tour that we can. We also host field trips and other groups on request and pride ourselves on creating tours that fit the age and accessibility level of whatever group is interested in learning more about Shelby County Tennessee history, plantation history, and all the peoples who lived here.

The preservation and interpretation of the various buildings at Davies Manor is key. From those original to the grounds, the c. 1850 log cabin dogtrot style Manor house, c. 1890 Commissary, and c. 1915 sharecropper's cabin called Mose Frozier's Cabin, to the additions, a 1948 log cabin dogtrot style house built out of 100 year old logs, a c. 1850 mystery cabin very little is known about, and a c.1890 schoolhouse for black children and freedmen after the Civil War known as Black Schoolhouse, we ensure the upkeep and preservation of both the spaces and the artifacts within them.

Population(s) Served

Davies Manor holds a good sized collection of original books and documents in house. We use these both to craft our research for the tours and exhibits as well as to provide a resource for other local researchers. While our earliest books and documents date to c.1820, the majority of our archives dates from 1860-1890 and 1950-1970.

Population(s) Served

Davies tries to create two to three new temporary exhibits a year. These exhibits are displayed in the Manor and used for field trips and other group tours as well. We focus on using our archives along with other local archives to create exhibits that showcase Shelby County Tennessee history, plantation life, or other facets of life from between about 1830-1930. Some recent exhibits include "The Lost Art of Letter Writing" July-September 2023 and "Black Midwifery in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries" October-December 2023.

Population(s) Served

Davies Manor sits on 37 acres of what was once a 2000 acre plantation. We use our natural environment to talk about agriculture and nature, the impact humans have had upon natural environments, the way different peoples have interacted with the land we are now on, and how we can be environmentally conscious and sustainable today.

Balance sheet

Fiscal Year: Jun 01 - May 31

SOURCE: IRS Form 990 info

The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
