What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Annual Student Shakespeare Festival

Beginning in 2006, each April, the Society produced the Student Shakespeare Festival in Balboa Park, near downtown San Diego, typically with 20-30 local schools participating, and in which elementary, middle, and high school students perform selections from the plays or sonnets, or offer other creative interpretations of Shakespeare's works. For 2020 and 2021, the festival has had to go online, but the 2022 festival was an in-person event. Our next festival is scheduled for April 15, 2023.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

In serving our mission, we endeavor to:

• Foster learning and comprehension of Shakespeare’s works, their context, and how they relate to contemporary society;
• Involve the audience as active participants in the theatrical experience;
• Promote inclusivity and diversity throughout our programming, activities, and audience;
• Serve as an online gateway and curator for the greater San Diego Shakespeare community by advocating area productions, educational events, and other relevant activities.

President

Mr. Gordon L Gidlund

A retired attorney with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel for 35 years and previously an adjunct professor at the University of San Diego School of Law for 17 years, Mr. Gidlund is naturally concerned with the intersection of the Bard and the law. Inspired by the efforts of Justice Anthony Kennedy, he has written four mock trial scripts subjecting Shakespearean characters to forensic examination. He is an Oxfordian and a signatory of the Declaration of Reasonable Doubt. In his youth, he taught English as a Peace Corps Volunteer in South Korea. He has a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a J.D. from the University of Minnesota.

Vice President

Nathan Agin

Nathan Agin is an audiobook narrator, online marketer/web designer, text coach, and podcast host of The Working Actor’s Journey. Nathan attended USC’s School of Dramatic Arts and trained in classical theatre with The Antaeus Company. He relocated to San Diego after four years in Hyde Park, Chicago and was fairly nomadic before that. He also volunteers in SD with Bridge Hospice, visiting patients and singing songs on the ukulele.
