Mission

God is inviting us to be a community of believers with Christ as the heart of our ministry, calling us to Proclaim, Care, Praise, Serve and Grow. Along with other churches in the Greater NJ Conference of the UMC, we are called to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We are the oldest congregation of Methodists in New Jersey, having been founded in 1770. We are an active congregation with a growing children's program, a strong music program; a soup ministry; community dinners; women's and men's groups; Sunday School for all ages and many other things. Our facility is used by other community groups including Wayside Ministries and the Bridge Players Theater Group which puts on high quality plays and musicals throughout the year.

School Backpack Giveaway

Our congregation purchases backpacks for local students who couldn't otherwise afford them. We include age-appropriate school supplies and hand out the backpacks in August before each school year.

Each year for the past ten years (with the exception of 2020 due to COVID), BSUMC has hosted the great great grandson of author Charles Dickens for two performances of his one-man play "A Christmas Carol"

The Reverend Doctor Teaira Parker is a pastor, scholar, community organizer and a newly appointed committee member of the GNJ Board of Church and Society beginning this June (2021). She has just earned her Doctor of Ministry in Public Theology from Drew University. She holds a MDiv. from Wesley Theological Seminary, a M.P.A. from Webster University and graduated with a B.S. in criminal justice. Most recently Teaira has participated in writing devotionals for a seminary, as well as helping people find their mission and calling in God through their gifts and being.
