Our main challenge is educating the Colombian public to care about farm animals and street dogs. There is a general ignorance around the meaning of a sanctuary and a lack of understanding of the benefits of a plant-based diet. Our project, therefore, aims to teach equality of all beings through practice and precept -- rescuing some animals and providing medical care for others, as well as doing educational programs, including vegan advocacy, free vegan cooking workshops, and distribution of literature.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Animal Rescue
We take in animals that have been abadoned or abused and give them the medical care they need and a safe home.
Meat-free Monday
In cooperation with the Food Yoga Academy, we plan to introduce Meat-free Monday into selected schools around Bogota.
The government has an office called ICBF (Instituto Colombiano d Bienestar familiar) that provides education and food to schools with children from families with a low income. These children are from 3 to 7 years old. This office provides money to feed them 5 times at day. Each of the schools decides what they want to cook, but the government has to approve the menu in consultation with expert nutritionists.
The Food Yoga Academy plans to hire professionals with expertise in plant-based nutrition to serve as consultants on this project and along with endorsements and the backing of successful Meat-free Monday campaigns in schools throughout Europe.
Nutrition education
Through vegan cooking classes and online advocacy, we introduce people to the benefits of a plant-based diet for their body, mind, and soul. We also help people understand the larger impact of their dietary choices, especially as it relates to animal welare and the environment.
Animal Care Training
We invite volunteers from around the world to learn how to care for rescued animals

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Equality for all beings - establishing equal rights to all animals in Colombia and educating and inspiring the public to enforce these rules. We also aspire to increase the number of people abstaining from all meat and dairy products so that the meat and dairy industry is forced to seek better practices and, ideally, new business models.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Education and example of kindness and compassion for all animals.
Juliana’s Animal Sanctuary is committed to providing quality care for the rescued animals under our care. This care comes in the form of proper shelters, fencing, security, nutritious meals, and medical care.
We will continue rescuing more animals as our budget and facilities permit.
Along with setting an example of quality care, we will expand our education services to include more school tours, interaction with the animals, and education materials for free distribution.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have the capacity to do many programs here but are currently lacking funds to expand these projects. At the moment we are reaching a few thousand people a year, but our goal is to reach millions in person and virtually.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have rescued over 1000 animals to date and educated over 50,000 people and currently care for 300 animals at the sanctuary.

Financial data
JULIANAS ANIMAL SANCTUARY INC
Balance sheetFiscal Year: Jan 01 - Dec 31
The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.

Director and Co-Founder
Mrs Juliana Castaneda Turner
Juliana Castaneda was born in Colombia, where from an early age she was introduced to ancient Vedic wisdom through her aunt, who had decided to become a Hindu nun. Juliana's love for animals was solidified with her now a deeper understanding of the spiritual equality of all beings, as taught in the famous Bhagavad-Gita. At age 5, Juliana adopted a vegetarian diet, and at age 11, she started saving money to build her animal sanctuary that now cares for over 140 animals. Juliana has held regular gourmet vegan cooking courses in Colombia for the last ten years, and through her teaching, she also tries to instill in her students the importance of food in one's spiritual development. Juliana is now a certified animal Reiki and aromatherapy healer and has been a student and practitioner of bhakti yoga for more than 26 years. She is currently the coordinator for FFL in South America and assistant to the director of Food For Life Global, the world's largest vegan food relief.

Equity strategies
Last updated: 03/31/2021GuideStar partnered with Equity in the Center - an organization that works to shift mindsets, practices, and systems to increase racial equity - to create this section. Learn more
- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
