What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Howdy Neighbor Events addresses the need for inclusive and representative community building in Northern Colorado. The organization focuses on connecting diverse artists, entrepreneurs, creators, and educators with their audiences. It tackles the lack of platforms where these groups can share their work and be celebrated for their diversity and creativity, especially in the realms of art, entrepreneurship, literacy, education, and popular culture. The organization aims to foster an environment where diversity, inclusiveness, and representation are not only encouraged but are foundational principles. By organizing events like Fort Collins Comic Con and Founded in FoCo, Howdy Neighbor Events strives to boost literacy, support local artists and entrepreneurs, and provide accessible cultural experiences. The goal is to create a vibrant, interconnected community where every individual can see themselves represented and valued.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Fort Collins Comic Con

Led by a team of super-geeks who love to build community and help fellow nerds, Fort Collins Comic Con brings the full convention experience to a small-scale event (average attendance is around 3,000 and more than 150 artists and creatives set up in the Vendor Hall and throughout the event space).

Fort Collins Comic Con has donated $120,000 over the last five years to the Poudre River Public Library District by bringing together thousands of geeks, pop-culture enthusiasts, gamers, fans, artists, writers, creators, cosplayers, and more into the Northside Aztlan Community Center.

Fort Collins Comic Con is meant to encourage youth literacy through comic books and other pop culture mediums. We also created the Con to fill a void for Northern Colorado geeks, who normally have to drive 2+ hours to attend huge events like Denver Pop Culture Con and StarFest, typically at great cost for attendees and vendors alike.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Because we serve the Northern Colorado community by way of a series of events, each of our event plans, activities, guests, and volunteers have to abide by a common set of grounding principles:

Representation Matters – we want each participant in our events to be able to recognize themselves in valued experts in our community.

Inclusive By Default – we want each participant in our events to feel welcome, valued, acknowledged, and honored for their presence in our community.

Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations – we believe in the concept of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations – that is: everyone is welcome at our events and celebrated for their differences as well as their similarities.

The ongoing purpose of Howdy Neighbor Events is to support, develop, and organize events that help promote the social welfare in Northern Colorado in the areas of art, entrepreneurship, literacy, education, and popular culture as a key human experience driven by the appreciation, intersection, and application of representation, inclusiveness, and diversity in the following ways:

- Actively encourage and model an environment of diversity, inclusiveness, and representation at all created and curated events;

- Facilitate the development and creation of Northern Colorado arts, entrepreneurship, literacy, education, and popular culture through creating and curating events;

- Assist and facilitate other Colorado-based organizations that promote representation, inclusiveness, and diversity in the arts, entrepreneurship, literacy, education, and popular culture, and;

- Provide, create, and curate opportunities, platforms, and events for representation, inclusiveness, and diversity in the arts, entrepreneurship, literacy, educational and popular culture spaces.

Howdy Neighbor Events is equipped with a core volunteer team experienced in event planning and community outreach. This team's expertise in organizing events like TEDxFoCo, Ignite Fort Collins, and Fort Collins Startup Week demonstrates a proven track record. The organization's ability to consistently engage the community and gather support highlights its strong capabilities in making a meaningful impact.

So far, the organization has successfully organized several major events, including Fort Collins Comic Con, which has grown significantly over the years, both in attendance and in donations to the Poudre River Public Library District and Alliance for Suicide Prevention. Future plans may include expanding the scale of existing events, introducing new events that align with the mission, and continuing to strengthen partnerships with local organizations and businesses to further promote literacy, creativity, and inclusiveness in Northern Colorado.

Balance sheet

Fiscal Year: Jan 01 - Dec 31

SOURCE: IRS Form 990 info

The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.

Executive Director

Nick Armstrong

My name is Nick Armstrong and I'm a community builder! Gathering together folks who enjoy dressing up like Wonder Woman, Iron Man, and Jyn Erso in one place sounds like fun, but for me as the Lead Organizer of Fort Collins Comic Con, it’s a way of life. Alongside my amazing team of volunteer geeks, it’s also a nifty way to have raised over $140,000 for the Poudre River Public Library District. It’s been my lifelong dream to kill the traditional business seminar dead. As Lead Organizer of Founded in FoCo, my team and I rally the Fort Collins small business community to teach free classes at a weeklong get-together to discuss such important topics as “Getting Clients To Pay By Raising An Eyebrow” and “Accounting That Won’t Make You Die A Little Inside.” At almost every event I host, I tear my pants. I’ve proudly torn asunder my jeans leading FoCo Comic Con (while in an inflatable T-Rex suit), TEDxFoCo, Ignite Fort Collins, LaidOffCamp/CareerCamp, PodCamp Fort Collins, and more.
