FIRMKeys Flood Mitigation Workshops

A series of free community workshops designed to help residents understand their risks for flooding and to assist with mitigation efforts.

A study of the Monroe County housing stock to determine the windstorm vulnerability of homes in Monroe County to generate accurate damage probability data that would drive rates.

FIRMKeys has formed a task force with municipal and county flood professionals to strive for a coordinated response to the FEMA re-mapping process.

FIRM is partnering with the City of Key West on a grant program the City was awarded through Gulf of Mexico Climate and Resilience Community of Practice The project fulfills three goals of the City's Adaptation Coordination Team: 1) increase financing options for adaption; 2) continue collaboration with others; and 3) decrease insurance burdens by reducing risk. Other partners in the program are Monroe County and the Monroe County Extension Service. The team is creating summaries of recent home elevations, hosting video workshops for homeowners interested in elevating, assist homeowners with technical issues, organize cooperative bidding, and document and disseminate project info.

Mel Montagne

Mel is Vice President of Sales for Keys Insurance Services. Prior to his current position, he implemented and led the retail insurance strategy for Union Planters Bank. Mel has been on the board of FIRM for approximately 5 years. Born in Cuba, Mel immigrated to the US in the early 60's with his parents and was raised in Miami, Florida. Mel still lives in South Florida with his wife and three daughters. He attended school in Miami as well as The College of Insurance in New York City. Mel has been honored by the legislative and business development committees of the Key Largo Chamber as well as receiving the Insurance Institute of America's Associate in Risk Management and the Construction Risk & Insurance Specialist designation.
