What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

IHDF aims to empower children to succeed in school, college, and career through provision of comprehensive academic support social and emotional learning, mentorship, and access to postsecondary education.

Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

"I Have A Dream"

We are working to ensure that all children in this nation have the opportunity to pursue higher education and to fully capitalize on their talents, aspirations, and leadership to have fulfilling careers and create a better world.

Our approach is unique in that we sponsor entire grade levels of 50-100 students in under-resourced public schools or housing developments, and work with these "Dreamers" from early elementary school all the way through postsecondary and beyond with guaranteed tuition assistance for higher education.

While each "I Have A Dream" program is localized to meet the specific needs of its Dreamers, all of our programs share common elements and take two basic forms, school-based and housing-based.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

IHDF aims to achieve lasting positive outcomes for children from under-resourced backgrounds to break the cycle of poverty and create generational change.

IHDF provides comprehensive year-round programs combining academic tutoring, enrichment activities, and mentorship. IHDF establishes strong relationships with scholars and families and collaborates with schools, local organizations, and housing entities to provide holistic support.

Since 1981, IHDF has served more than 20,000 Dreamers in over 200 I Have A Dream programs operating in 28 states, Washington, D.C., and New Zealand. IHDF has freely shared its model with others individuals, corporations, church and community groups, and government agencies to generate other educational support programs that help many more children who lack a clear pathway to college and career.

Currently, IHDF has a national staff of fifteen who provide program guidance and bandwidth support, data retention and evaluation services, and professional development to affiliates across eight states. To that end, our work in the national office maximizes the efforts of the more than 80 full-time affiliate staff who work with over 1,400 dreamers nationally. IHDF's dedicated staff, board, affiliates, and burgeoning alumni network work diligently to continue to grow the reach and impact of the organization's work.

In addition to affiliate support, IHDF directly serves more than 400 Dreamers in NYC, supporting them as they develop and fostering a community of support to help them reach their full potential.

More than anything, Dreamers' accomplishments speak to the power of IHDF's work. Dreamers are more than three times more likely to earn a bachelor's degree than their peers in under-resourced communities and 77% of Dreamers are the first in their families to graduate college.

IHDF is currently extending its impactful reach to over 3,000 Dreamer Scholars, achieving remarkable advancements in enhancing early literacy rates, boosting graduation rates, and elevating post-secondary enrollment. A recent study underscores IHDF's efficacy: in Fall, 90% of pilot participants displayed reading skills below the 50th percentile; however, after a mere 20 weeks, a staggering 84% of Dreamers surged forward by 3-7 reading levels in Spring. Beyond these achievements, IHDF excels with a high school graduation rate surpassing the national average by 7 points and a post-secondary enrollment rate soaring 10 points above the norm.

IHDF is in the process of expanding its operations with plans to add new chapters. This strategic step highlights the organization's commitment to extending its reach to a broader audience of young scholars across more communities.

Balance sheet

Fiscal Year: Sep 01 - Aug 31

SOURCE: IRS Form 990 info

The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
