We seek out and take in the animals who no other organization will help or would simply euthanize because they are too expensive to heal. We rescue the abandoned, beaten, bred, fought, injured, terrified, defeated and betrayed. The minute they enter our doors, we look in their eyes and promise them ALL the second chance they deserve for health, home, commitment and love, no matter the time or cost. Our Vision is to ensure a bright future for the underdog, end needless suffering, negligence, and abuse, serve the City of St. Louis and surrounding metro areas and have the largest inner-city animal sanctuary in the country.

Stray Rescue\'s Stracks Fund was established to provide emergency medical care to stray companion animals who have suffered from the most severe abuse and neglect. As a no-kill organization and because every animal we save requires medical attention, the Stracks Fund is the first and most vital component of rehabilitating the strays we rescue and is the program that continues to require the most consistent funding. The Stracks Fund gives thousands of companion animals a special second chance that they would not have had otherwise, and it enables us to prepare them for adoption to loving, forever homes. \\nThe Stracks Fund was established from witnessing the most severe, unfair animal abuse in St. Louis, and these medical issues often involve extensive treatment. However, it\’s our philosophy that every life we rescue is worth saving, and they are all deserving of a second chance.

Stracks Medical Fund

The Stracks Emergency Medical Fund is the lifeline for our companion animals who are abused, neglected, and abandoned to the harsh streets. Our rescue teams uncover shocking abuse and neglect on almost a daily basis, with injuries including gunshot wounds, burns, amputated limbs, and extreme malnutrition. With a medical budget of $1.5 million annually, there is always a need to bolster The Stracks Fund to ensure uninterrupted care for these critical cases.

In 2012, Stray Rescue led the way to creating St. Louis City’s first animal cruelty task force. Comprised of the Mayor’s Office, Stray Rescue, the Department of Health, the Circuit Attorney’s Office, the Police Department and the Municipal Courts, the Mayor Slay Animal Cruelty Task Force is a leading national example of how a multi-agency alliance, can drastically improve the landscape for both companion animals and people, making our streets safer for everyone.

This program provides medical/health care to the pets of low-income families and individuals who have shown a commitment to keeping their companion(s) but do not have the financial means to do so. Each participating household is assigned a caseworker who will coordinate spay/neutering of the pet through Stray Rescue's veterinary facility. Stray Rescue also provides food and supplies. However, the value of the program extends well beyond medical benefits and general care. Caseworkers provide education on proper pet care, which encourages responsibility, fosters self-reliance, and results in the empowerment of the family to be a part of the solution, as well as advocates for companion animals.

This is a fun, unique, and meaningful way to stay in shape while enriching the lives of shelter dogs as they await their loving forever homes. The Stray Rescue Running Buddies/Hiking program ensures these dogs get plenty of exercise, attention, and exposure to environments outside of the shelter. Perfect for everyone, from those who are easing into their newfound workout routine to seasoned marathon runners looking to liven up their training, motivation to get fit is never a problem when you know your walking/jogging pooch partner is waiting. The Hiking Club also aims to improve the lives of shelter dogs through hiking. In addition to providing these dogs with much needed time out of the shelter it gives anyone who loves to hike, backpack or trail run the opportunity to meet their perfect four legged companion.

Stray Rescue's Panda Program is a hospice program for dogs. In this program you agree to take a dog into your home who has a limited amount of time left to live. The dogs in this program have been diagnosed with terminal illness or may be very old or both. They are deserving of a home where they can live out their remaining life with love and dignity and not have to die alone. Quality of life is the most important part for us all, and together we can give these dogs a happy, safe, and loving end of life.

Through the Puppies for Parole program, Stray Rescue dogs are paired with select offenders who become trainers to the dogs in the program. The animals live with their offender handlers at the medium-security Missouri Eastern Correctional Center in Pacific, MO for a 3 month period. Benefitting both the offenders and the dogs with which they are paired, Puppies for Parole allows for consistent socialization and obedience training of rescued shelter dogs with the goal of each dog obtaining their Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification and increasing their chances of being adopted by the end of the program.

Stray Rescue trains and certifies select rescue dogs as therapy or service dogs. This program offers a low-cost opportunity for those seeking to adopt a therapy or service animal. We offer training in therapeutic community support, medical and psychiatric service tasks. From veterans with PTSD to toddlers with chromosomal deficiencies, the animals trained in this program have gone on to do exceptional work.

The Stracks Fund allows companion animals to be meticulously monitored and documented. The sequence of saving a companion animal moments from death, only to see that same animal walk out, healthy with their tail wagging is utterly gratifying. This program responds to these needs by:\\n1. Supporting every animal to the fullest extent, emphasizing that he or she is well worth the effort and thus encouraging responsible, committed pet guardians.\\n\\n2. Assuring immediate, uninterrupted care can be given to end the suffering of companion animals.\\n\ \\n3. Giving all companion animals every possible chance at a life filled with affection, comfort, safety, health and love. \\n\ \\n4. Communicating to potential adopters the entire recovery process, which educates on the realities of the adoptive now healthy former stray, encourages kindness and motivates more people to adopt.\\n\\n5. Properly rehabilitating healthy companion animals in order to achieve higher adoption rates and fewer return by owner rates.

The Stracks Fund directly saves lives. It is the first and most significant step in giving companion animals a second lease on life. By bolstering The Stracks Fund, Stray Rescue can achieve the following:\\n\ \\n1. Provide innovative treatment for life-threatening abuse and disease, such as gunshot wounds, amputation, extreme malnourishment, broken bones, heartworm disease, etc.\\n\\n2. Bolster in-house trauma unit with equipment, diagnostics, and medicine. It is essential that Stray Rescue continues to secure the resources necessary to either provide emergency medical treatment or be able to adequately stabilize an animal before sending them to Veterinary Specialty Services (VSS), a partner specialty veterinary hospital.

Since 1998, Stray Rescue is unique in that we proactively save the animals other organizations turn away or euthanize. They are the abused, neglected and abandoned companion animals in St. Louis, MO. The first and most vital step in their rehabilitation is medical care, and we\'re proud to be known for always going above and beyond to provide the care these animals need, regardless of circumstances. \\n\\nStray Rescue is committed to making St. Louis a compassionate city where every companion animal knows health, comfort, and affection. We see a day where no stray will be euthanized merely because they have been abandoned, abused, or neglected. Stray Rescue is out on the streets daily taking a progressive, proactive approach in establishing a permanent resolution to the stray companion animal epidemic. We are accomplishing this through dedicated rescue efforts, sheltering, community outreach programs, education, collaborations, and the encouragement of responsible pet guardianship.

Stray Rescue measures success by how many medically rehabilitated animals are adopted into loving homes. In 2017, we took in and helped 2,663 abused, neglected and homeless companion animals and we are on track to help close to 3,000 animals in 2018. All of these companion animals received top quality medical care because of the Stracks Fund. There is a correlation between the growth and support of the Stracks Fund and our annual increase in adoptions. We have seen a sustained increase in adoptions over the past five years as we continue to strengthen adoption, foster, shelter enrichment and training programs.
