What we aim to solve
The THANC (Thyroid, Head and Neck Cancer) Foundation aims to improve the care provided to patients who have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer or head and neck cancers. We attempt to do so by performing clinical research in these areas of cancer, and educating patients and caregivers on their cancer type as well as providing educational content to physicians treating these patients. Finally we provide online resources to provide knowledge hope and support to those newly diagnosed.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Surgical Fellowship
Head & Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery, and Thyroid/Parathyroid Surgery Fellowship. THANC selects 1 fellow per year to receive funding for a full-range, hands-on experience in surgical oncology, microvascular and reconstructive surgical techniques, and multidisciplinary patient management accredited at Mount Sinai Beth Israel’s Institute for Head, Neck, and Thyroid Cancers. The American Head & Neck Society (AHNS) accredited this program in 2010.
Research Associate (RA) Program
Research Associates (RA) work with an interdisciplinary team of physicians and scientists to play an integral role in clinical research. They present at regional and national conferences, write and publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed, industry esteemed journals (i.e. The Laryngoscope, JAMA Otolaryngology -- Head & Neck Surgery) which lead to innovative improvements in patient care and treatments. RAs follow patients throughout their entire clinical course, collect data for clinical studies, and review patient charts. RAs are recent college graduates completing two gap years with a uniquely invaluable clinical and research experience before attending medical school.
Speech Language Pathology (SLP) Clinical Fellowship
With the support of Mount Sinai Downtown's Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, THANC supports a year-long Clinical Fellowship in Speech Language Pathology (SLP). Under the closer supervision of an experienced Head & Neck Speech Language Pathologist, as well as the Professor and Chief of Head & Neck Surgical Oncology, the fellowship provides SLP clinicians starting their careers the rare opportunity to learn how to facilitate voice and swallowing rehabilitation for the medically complex head & neck patient. The SLP fellow is an integral part of a multidisciplinary team of physicians and allied health professionals. The fellow collaborates with Mount Sinai Cancer Center and THANC's Functional Outcomes Research Lab on various IRB-approved research protocols, encompassing basic science and functional outcomes related to head & neck cancer.
Thyroid, Head & Neck Cancer (THANC) Guide
The THANC Guide is a comprehensive digital knowledge bank and a significant resource that endeavors to help patients and caregivers through their cancer journey. This is accomplished through: (1) regularly updated, in-depth medical information written in layman's terms; (2) a plethora of video content, illustration, glossary of terms; and (3) a child-life component that specifically aims to address the many issues surrounding the communication with young family members of patients, as well as young patients about cancer. Additionally, the THANC Guide is a tremendous reference point for physicians around the world who can visit the site for a wealth of updated, unbiased, medical information. The THANC Guide will soon expand to include a special physician portal that will enable clinicians to tap into a lecture-format journal club.
Virtual Thyroid Journal Club
THANC hosts a weekly virtual journal club, where leading physicians are invited to present their recent work in thyroid cancer care. The objective of the virtual journal club is to provide a multi-institutional platform to inform the medical community of breakthrough aspects of treatments for thyroid malignancies, and to promote the discussion and collaboration on relevant research topics. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, we have engaged a global roster of speakers and audience who benefit from this weekly educational session. In addition - recordings of each session are made available following the session and are viewed by between 500-2000 physicians worldwide.
"Can You Hear My Voice" Film Screening Series
In 2018, THANC helped sponsor the production of a film—"Can You Hear My Voice?" Directed and produced by Bill Brummel, "Can You Hear My Voice?" is a documentary about the arduous transition from a life with a voice box, to one without. It is told through the personal stories of members of the Shout At Cancer choir—an extraordinary group in London made up of individuals who have had their voice boxes surgically removed in a life-altering surgery called a laryngectomy—as they prepare for the most ambitious concert they have ever performed.
In 2020, THANC will be partnering with Atos Medical in a special campaign to host a series of film screenings at medical institutions across the country. The goal of these screenings is (1) to provide an opportunity for all laryngectomees to view this uplifting documentary film that will give hope & encouragement; and (2) to encourage the physical gathering of patients, family, caregivers, physicians, social workers, people whose lives have been touched by the laryngectomy procedure, and to subsequently aim to create a more robust community of head & neck cancer patients nationwide.
TIROxMDs
TIRO (Thyroid International Recommendations Online) is a compilation of multiple, widely-recognized international thyroid nodule and thyroid cancer guidelines from the United States, Europe and Japan. TIRO puts all of the most up-to-date guidelines in one easy to access site. In addition, it compares and contrasts international thyroid cancer and thyroid nodule guidelines, white papers and recommendations in a way that identifies where guidelines align and where discrepancies exist. It acts as a dynamic resource for clinicians on contemporary topics via weekly journal clubs, lectures, tumor boards and round table discussions. This program is led by a multidisciplinary board composed of top thyroid specialists from around the world.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Improve the care provided to patients through clinical research and physician education. Additionally we aim to provide knowledge, hope and support to newly diagnosed patients, and their caregivers, family and friends to support them along their cancer journey.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We constantly aim to update the THANC guide so we can allow thyroid and head and neck cancer patients to be educated on their cancer type and what to expect along their journey. We also aim to educate community physicians and provide them with specific educational content relevant to treating thyroid cancer patients who are largely followed in the community setting. We provide the THANC guide content in Spanish and English to expand our reach and reduce inequalities in healthcare. We are also incorporating a clinical trials finder onto the THANC guide to expand this potential treatment option to those who may not have access to academic medical centers in order to further reduce inequalities in healthcare.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are uniquely positioned to meet our goals as we have the support of experts to provide educational content and a team of research associates to perform clinical research in the areas of head and neck and thyroid cancer. Our team is also working with a well-respected partner in the clinical trials space to make this information available and accessible to the users of the THANC guide to improve access to clinical trials and decrease disparities or inequality in healthcare.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The THANC guide continues to reach a wider audience each month which shows that we are making progress towards reaching those individuals who need this knowledge hope and support related to thyroid and head and neck cancers. Our reach is global in nature, and our resources are used primarily by English and Spanish speaking users worldwide. Additionally, our virtual thyroid education platform TIROxMDs is reaching a larger audience each year - with recorded programming being watched by many individuals worldwide.

Financial data
The THANC Foundation, Inc.
Balance sheetFiscal Year: Jan 01 - Dec 31
The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
