What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The Opportunity Through Entrepreneurship Foundation (OTEF) has supported Arizona entrepreneurs and at-risk populations since 2005. Beginning in 2019, our AZAdvances program has focused on Arizona's growing entrepreneurial base in the area of health innovation. Our challenge is that Arizona needs to increase its STEM workforce and provide higher levels of entrepreneurial support to our emerging life science companies if our community is to achieve it's goal of doubling impact by 2033.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our goals include:

1) Encourage more students to pursue careers in STEM Fields related to health innovation an assist them on their journey.

2) Support Arizona-based life science entrepreneurs in commercializing life science discoveries that can become health innovations.

3) Provide early-stage, mission related investments that support the commercialization of future health innovations.

Goal 3 - Good Health & Well-being - We support Arizona health innovators who are working on vaccines and other treatments that can have a global impact on both disease and on reducing healthcare costs.

Goal 4 - Quality Education - Our AZAdvances Talent program includes paid internship opportunities for students so as they explore future career choices.

Goal 8 - Economic Growth - Our goal is to double the health impact and economic impact of Arizona's health innovation sector by 2033.

Goal 9 - Industry and Innovation Infrastructure -By leveraging the scientific research within our Arizona based universities and institutes, we are supporting the translation of their discoveries into products and services that can impact the lives of people in Arizona and around the world.

While our organization is small, our partnerships are powerful. Examples include:

1) Resource Support from the Arizona Bioindustry Association (AZBio) and the ability to work with their 280 member companies to build workforce and entrepreneurial solutions.

2) In 2022, OTEF was selected and contracted to be the non profit that will receive distributions from the Arizona Health Innovation Trust Fund that was established under Arizona Revised Statutes 41-177 (https://www.azleg.gov/ars/41/00177.htm) to perform the workforce development and entrepreneurial support outlined in the statute.

In 2022 we accomplished the following:

1) Continued to support our students through the AZAdvances Talent Program. the program has supported 1,400 students to date with programs including opportunities to connect with industry leaders, merit based scholarships, and paid internships.

2) Selected by the State Board of Investment to be Arizona's partner in delivering the programmatic impacts from the Arizona Health Innovation Trust.

3) Funding raised in 2022 also supports our planned 2023 mission related investments.

Balance sheet

Fiscal Year: Jan 01 - Dec 31

SOURCE: IRS Form 990 info

The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
