What we aim to solve
Continued membership growth is important to us, but we serve songwriters who struggle financially to contribute to a membership organization.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Workshops
Open to all songwriters, composers, musicians, singers and music lovers, this is your chance to develop your songwriting in a supportive and intimate environment, meet invaluable music industry experts, network with fellow members, and be part of your local songwriters community.
Come to regular Songsalive! song critique workshops and develop collaborations, meet industry guests, showcase and gain feedback for your songs and music in a professional and supportive environment. The Songsalive! workshops are open to all songwriters and music composers of all levels and music genres (preference is given to Pro members for critique, and we encourage everyone to join Songsalive! to maximize your opportunities with us).
The first half is solely dedicated to an in-the-round critique workshop where writers present one song each - either on tape, CD (sometimes iPod) or live - with feedback and critique given by a guest speaker or the Songsalive! moderator (who in-turn allows some comments from attendees also).
The second half is dedicated to an Music Industry educational and informative discussion/talk, often with a guest speaker, and plenty of time to talk and network. Our guest speakers represent all facets of the industry from A&R, publishers, successful producers, CD production and distribution execs and, of course, writers and composer who share their ideas, tips & techniques on all aspects of the songwriting craft.
Some topics include song structure, song production, lyric writing, finding inspiration, songs and the media, promoting your music online, how to tour, how to get songs in film and television, performing at your best.
Our workshops are designed for songwriters and composers (from budding to professional) who have written songs, or are in the songwriting stage, who want to further their craft, gain feedback on their music, and potentially get their songs out to the world. However, we also have singers, musicians, and non music types who attend as it's a great networking opportunity (singers looking for songwriters, or musicians looking for songs, as examples).
The goals of the workshop are about:
1) the SONG and making it the best it can be
2) providing a community for our members to gather, network, collaborate and learn.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Aim: Songsalive! is an organization, acting non-profit, dedicated to the nurturing, support, promotion, exposure and education of songwriters and composers to the world's music markets. We coin it 'GIVE LIFE TO SONG'.
Mission: Encourage and foster all genres of original music and song expression within our songwriters' communities, in order to support and promote songwriters and composers worldwide, through critique workshops, showcases, events, educational seminars, conferences, and programs with continued development, annual reviews and expansion.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Objectives:

* To provide a worldwide community, a home, a family, for songwriters and composers around the world to co-create, collaborate, network, workshop ideas, develop finished recorded and published product, and feel supported, promoted, nurtured and educated.

* Provide opportunities for original music and songs to be heard by industry representatives, including record and publishing companies, producers, music supervisors, other songwriters, other interested music personnel and the general public.

* Create a learning environment (education) for songwriters to develop their writing, encourage writing collaborations and create improvisation sessions.

* To be a ‘one stop song shop’ (central source)for music industry representatives to find a song or songwriter/artist.

* To foster interaction between songwriters and composers of different nations to collaborate an create opportunities. Through our program Songcollab, focused on songwriters and composers who tour overseas or wish to pursue their music careers abroad (we effectively become their “door stop to the world”), Songsalive! offers support, resources, contacts, music industry networking opportunities, performance and touring, co-writing, collaborations and learning workshops, as follows:

- To provide a network for songwriters and composers of difference nations, create a door stop for overseas writers in the United States, and encourage cross-collaboration. - Create space and opportunities for traveling songwriters and composers to write with writers of other nations.

- Provide a platform for songwriters and composers of different nations to perform abroad for music industry representatives and the public, in a supportive environment.

- Provide a global online presence for songwriters and composers of different nations through our website songsalive.org, whereby they can network and find collaborations with other songwriters and composers from other nations and with each other, in the International environment.

- Represent songwriters' and composers' songs from different nations to the broader International music industry and music conferences on their behalf where they would otherwise not have this opportunity in their own county.

- Help songwriters from different nations launch music albums and create Tours in foreign territories through special Songsalive! media promotions
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
THROUGH

1. LIVE EVENTS - various activities and resources including songwriting workshops, live performance showcases, festivals and exhibitions, and networking events.

2. What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Songsalive! is dedicated to advancing and supporting songwriters and composers worldwide.

We are the ONLY completely volunteer-run, international (world-wide) non-profit organization for songwriters and composers, serving the songwriting community for over 20 years. We survive purely on memberships, donations, events and love. The fact that we've accomplished this through volunteers and philanthropic spirit, against all the for-profit commercial music businesses, is astounding.

We've created a social network for songwriters online and recently a mobile app. No other songwriters organization has done this.

We've survived: 20 years, in the tough music business.

Next, we look to expand our reach with the mobile app, create more on-the-go opportunities and programs, and get into the virtual event space so everyone around the world can partake in our events.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
