According to the California Department of Education (2017), of the 17,000 children diagnosed with hearing loss each year in California, 15,000 of them do not have access to the intensive, specialized services required to help them reach their highest potential. Babies and children who are deaf or hard of hearing require special specialized services and programs, including individual speech therapy and acoustically appropriate classrooms to listen and acquire spoken language, Foundation for Hearing Research/Weingarten Children's Center is teaching children with hearing loss to listen and speak for over 55 years.

Parent Infant Program

Provides one-on-one and one-on-several in-person training of parents of newborns to 18 month-olds who are deaf or hard of hearing. The program leader provides counsel, demonstration, training, and reassurance to parents who have recently learned that their baby is deaf or hard of hearing.

A small group program for children 18 months up to 3 years of age. Emphasis is on listening and spoken language development through a cognitive based curriculum and parent participation.

Daily small group thematic instruction for children 4-5 years of age that focuses on listening and spoken language as well as pre-academic skills needed to prepare children for Kindergarten. Preschool and Pre-K students must enroll at WCC at minimum of 3 days per week.

Prekindergarten and Kindergarten integrate all elements of the curriculum to ensure that graduates have the auditory, language, social, and cognitive abilities to succeed in mainstream education programs. Data that FHR gathers shows that its graduates perform well in their mainstream school programs.

An afternoon, large group mainstream preparation program available to preschool, Pre-k and kindergarten students who are ready for a longer day. This afternoon program creates increased opportunities for social interaction and learning to listen in a larger group setting.

Comprehensive speech-language screening, evaluation and therapy services. Students enrolled in class at WCC will receive pull out therapy. Children who are not enrolled in class at WCC can access speech-language services at our Center on an as needed basis.

A fun and structured “Summer Camp” experience that includes social interaction opportunities, individual therapy, and classroom participation for all students. Typically developing siblings and peers are invited to participate as well. Often we offer a one week alumni camp during the Extended School Year Program.

Developed in collaboration with Stanford School of Medicine, the BabyTalk program provides teletherapy for families of children with hearing loss from birth to 3 years of age. Family receives individualized, interactive and engaging family centered teletherapy in their own home.

Foundation for Hearing Research is a model of excellence in providing Listening and Spoken Language services. Our goal is to provide comprehensive services to babies and children who are deaf or hard of hearing and teach them to listen and talk. We prepare our students at an early age to build their creative and critical thinking skills which are essential for effective communication. We want to ensure that children with hearing loss can can keep up the pace with their hearing peers and transition into the mainstream educational program .

Instruction at Weingarten Children's Center is distinctive for its emphasis on cognitive development where spoken language is developed through higher order thinking skills. Dedicated teachers who developed and constantly improve our innovative curriculum that not only aligns with State Standards, but also encourages children to develop thinking and problem solving skills at an early age.

We employ experienced, expert Teachers of the Deaf, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Specialists and Speech Language Pathologists who use our comprehensive, specialized curriculum and advanced technology to teach children spoken language along with coaching parents on how to apply these method throughout the waking our ours of their child's life. Each morning begins with staff and families together with music enrichment that dramatically improves language development, speech perception, and early reading skills. Highly skilled speech-language pathologists who meet daily with students individually and partner with parents to develop clearly understood speech and language through highly motivating lessons. Talented on-site clinical audiologist who monitors on a day-to-day basis each child’s hearing and technology devices to ensure they are hearing the best they can. Innovative occupational therapist who prepares our students to learn by working to integrate the child’s sensory and motor systems; their core cognitive skills. Our on-site Audiologist collaborates with the child's teaching team and monitors hearing devices for our students.

We have developed a highly effective curriculum, successfully trained children with hearing loss for 55 years in listening and spoken language and implemented the only tele-therapy program in California, BabyTalk. Next we ill extend our reach to undeserved population and develop technology to deliver our program to more children.

Executive Director

William Doyle

Bill brings private sector career experience focused on building strong organizations by combining operating management, strategy, and capital. He has managed organizations, served on boards of directors of for-profit and non-profit entities, raised equity and debt capital as fund manager and investment banker, and provided strategic and operating advice as consultant. He holds a B.S.E. from Princeton University and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Bill works with WCC and its strategic partners to strengthen, finance, and deliver highly effective early intervention and truly significant impact for children with hearing loss, wherever they may live and whatever their circumstances.
