Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Edesia's overarching goal is to help end child hunger and malnutrition through increasing the production of life-saving, nutrient-dense ready-to-use therapeutic and supplementary foods.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Edesia's strategy is to reach the most malnourished children possible by running the most efficient ready-to-use food factory in the United States. Edesia places a strong emphasis on internal staff training and development, including production workers, that creates a highly capable, nimble, and adaptable workforce. Edesia achieved even greater economies of scale in 2016 when its operations moved to a new 83,000 square foot facility.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
There are two factories in the world capable of manufacturing a full range of peanut-based, ready-to-use therapeutic and supplementary foods to treat and prevent malnutrition in children and pregnant and lactating women, and Edesia is one of them (the other one being Nutriset in France). Edesia is known for its ingenuity in optimizing production processes and its ability to develop and create new products for different populations, such as for underprivileged schoolchildren in the United States and adults living with HIV among others.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Edesia's best indicator of success as a nonprofit and social enterprise is the number of children reached through its efforts. Since production began in March 2010, Edesia has made enough ready-to-use foods to help treat and prevent malnutrition for over 16 million malnourished children across 60 countries.

Balance sheetFiscal Year: Jan 01 - Dec 31
The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.

Founder and CEO
Ms. Navyn Salem
Navyn Salem is the Founder and CEO of Edesia.
Tackling malnutrition became Navyn Salem’s lifelong mission after visiting Tanzania, her father’s birthplace. In 2009, she set out to expand the reach of lifesaving ready-to-use foods and founded Edesia, a non-profit social enterprise with a mission to help treat and prevent malnutrition in the world’s most vulnerable populations. Her efforts have since helped transform the lives of over 16 million malnourished children across 60 countries in partnership with UNICEF, the World Food Programme, USAID/USDA, and other humanitarian organizations working to end hunger and malnutrition worldwide.
