Mission

Access Now defends and extends the digital rights of people and communities at risk. As a grassroots-to-global organization, we partner with local actors to bring a human rights agenda to the use, development, and governance of digital technologies, and to intervene where technologies adversely impact our human rights. By combining direct technical support, strategic advocacy, grassroots grantmaking, and convenings such as RightsCon, we fight for human rights in the digital age.

Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Advocacy

Our Advocacy arm aims to advise decision makers, influence legislation, engage in strategic litigation, deploy nimble and tailored rapid response interventions, and realize substantive change in the world. The arm comprises four teams working in tandem: Policy and International Programs, Legal-Programmatic, Campaigns and Rapid Response, and Communications and Engagement.

Our Advocacy work is strategically driven and implemented by our regional teams throughout the Asia Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Africa, and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Our regional strategies guide our work at the international level, which is driven by our engagement with multilateral institutions such as the UN as well as through large-scale thematic campaigns.

Access Now Grants provides flexible and grantee-driven funding to grassroots and frontline organizations fighting for human rights in the digital age. In recognition of the increasingly difficult circumstances in which civil society groups operate — from targeted censorship, to restrictions on operations, to threats to physical safety — the Grants team works to strengthen the global digital rights community by expanding, diversifying, and empowering the movement at the grassroots.

Balance sheet

Fiscal Year: Jan 01 - Dec 31

SOURCE: IRS Form 990 info

The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot survive long, but the types of assets and liabilities must also be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan, and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
