What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Since we began the "war on poverty" our poverty rate has largely gone unchanged. In fact the numbers of families at or under the poverty live has increased. We want to make a difference by investing time, energy, and partnering with those who are working with these children. We want to bolster the good things already going well in under served communities. We firmly believe that when we change their environment God gets a chance to change their hearts. We love them unconditionally and teach them basic financial principles as well as leadership principles. Our hearts are that they go back and make a difference in their community. For us it is not just a week of camp but we continue to invest in the partner who brought the camper and the camper.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Summer Camp

We host under-served kids at a week long, overnight summer camp of high adventure. We do ropes, water slides, mud runs, and paint ball.
All activities are geared to be life skill building activities. In addition we use image driven lessons to grow them as leaders in their community.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We want to raise up leaders in these under served communities!
We believe that if we pour into children ages 8-12, and grow them as leaders it gives the other children something different to look at and aspire to. How will a young lady know how to pick a quality husband one day if she never sees quality men? How will a Godly young man find a quality wife if he never (or rarely) sees one?
In the 4 years of camps we have seen a remarkable growth in campers but also even in the partners we serve. The impact of summer camps are well documented and we are enjoying the same results.

We believe that by using week long, overnight camps we get the kids out of their environment which opens them up to see something different. Usually around the end or day 2 and especially on day 3 we see the walls come down and they begin to open up. Allowing themselves to be filled with hope and belief in themselves.
Also, we intentionally put High Quality young people in front of the kids so they can see and begin to identify with them.

We hosted 20 children at our first camp in 2018. We have now had four years of camps with 122 campers through those years, even during Covid. In 2020 we did a Virtual Camp that was viewed by some 400 campers at their locations.
For the first time, in 2022 we are planning for 100 campers and are expanding to two weeks in two different locations.

We hosted 20 campers last year for our first camp.
Since then we have had 122 campers, through C-19, and even had a virtual camp option in 2020.
We are planning for 100 campers in 2022.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
